Default San Francisco 49ers Waive Linebacker Thaddeus Gibson

Quote:
The San Francisco 49ers have waived linebacker Thaddeus Gibson. Gibson, who spent a portion of last season with the team, was initially listed as a third string linebacker for the 49ers in their preseason depth chart behind Parys Haralson and Aldon Smith. The addition of Antawn Applewhite, however, seems to have sealed Gibson's fate with the team as Applewhite is poised to replace him.

The 23-year-old Gibson will enter his second year in the league after being drafted in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. He did not receive any playing time however and was cut by the team. The Ohio State product later signed with the 49ers and appeared in the final two games of the season against the St. Louis Rams and the Arizona Cardinals. He recorded three tackles and one forced fumble in limited action.

Gibson was present for the 49ers' preseason game against the New Orleans Saints but did play. He will now look for a new team with the NFL season just four weeks away.
So 2010 4th round OLB Thaddeus Gibson is now a free agent. The organization was very high on him during training camp, enough so to carry 9 linebackers last season. He was cut midway through the season in order to sign Steve McClendon to the active roster after Aaron Smith got injured and the team elected not to place him on injured reserve. Gibson was the "low man on the totem pole" because he had to miss a lot of minicamp due to his outstanding academic obligations with Ohio State, allowing Jason Worilds and Stevenson Sylvester to take away his potential playing time. This past draft, with the departure of Keyaron Fox, the Steelers drafted OLB Chris Carter in the 5th round to basically serve the role that Gibson was drafted to fill.

With Gibson now available, do you think the Steelers should at least bring him in to camp? I personally would like to see the Steelers get him back and see if he really was 'the one that got away' that so many people were crying about last year after the 49ers scooped him up. If they do sign him, where would you put his odds of making the 53 man roster? How greatly would you say his signing increases the odds of the Steelers carrying 9 LBs this year as opposed to 8?

If SF cut him, this early, he is rubbish. It's not like SF has an overflowing
abundance of LB talent, although they do have the best ILB in Willis. This
guy isn't worth much of a look unless they just need a camp body, which I
doubt.

Yet again, despite the nay sayers, the FO has shown they know a little bit about football, lol

Granted not canning Smith last year and putting him on IR, in hindsight was a bad move. But at least Gibson proved he couldn't cut it, on someone elses dime.

Yeah our genius FO sat on Worilds instead. You know the guy that got manhandled in the last preseason game and seems unmotivated in camp?

Hopefully they bring Gibson back.

i think the only people really high on thad were/are hardcore OSU fans.

anyways he has proven to be as easilly replaceable as he was disposable. he woulda nev er even sniffed the field last year just as im sure he wouldnt this year if brought back on. this would be a 2nd year of camps and OTA's missed. how could that possibly make him any better than he was when we kicked him to the curb?

You honestly think the 49ers cutting a player is a sign of that player being no good? Don't forget that they drafted a linebacker in the first round, and the team is under a new regime that is not loyal to him, yet is loyal to their new draft picks and free agents, a pool that includes multiple outside linebackers. So just because a team cuts a player doesn't mean he "proved" that he can't cut it. I have been reading some 49er blogs and does not seem to be any legitimate performance-based reason for his being released, and most speculate that he was cut because Harbaugh desires to go after Aaron Maybin. The Steelers had no desire whatsoever to be rid of him. Their goal was to slip him onto the practice squad, but the 49ers claimed him off waivers. Go back and read basically anything about the guy before the Steelers released him to remind yourself of what the organization felt about him.

It doesn't really make any sense to praise our FO for having the foresight to cut him if they didn't have the foresight not to draft him. That's just weird. Besides, all indications last season were that they were high on him, right up to the day he was waived.

What I find even weirder is the insistence (originating with pure FO spin, in my opinion) here and elsewhere that Gibson was cut so as to sign McClendon and/or keep Smith on the active roster. Nonsense. He was cut so as to keep Arnaz Battle on the roster. They could have cut Battle's worthless ass at any time, and yet didn't. Nine special teams tackles later, we still have no clue what they were thinking.

I'm guessing the guy has never heard the story of James Harrison and how many times he was cut.
