Despite the bust in Sweed, I say that overall, the Steelers are one of the most successful teams in drafting WRs. And that is somewhat unusual for a team that emphasizes defense and running.
To make my point, lets just say that the Steelers were able to keep all the WRs that they drafted that are currently active in the NFL. They would have a WR corp consisting of: Hines Ward Santonio Holmess Plexico Buress Mike Wallace Emmanual Sanders Antonio Brown That would be one heck of a lineup. I can't think of another team's WRs lineup that could beat that. Maybe the Giants (Nicks, Manningham, Steve Smith), Cardinals (Fitzgerald, Boldin, Breston) or Vikings (Moss, Harvin, Sidney Rice) could make a case but I would still want the Steelers' group. |

But your qualifier "that are currently active in the NFL" automatically eliminates their busts, like Troy Edwards, Will Blackwell, Willie Reid, Fred Gibson, etc. There were some ugly misses in there. Any list at any position that consists only of current starters is going to look impressive to the homers.

Wallace and Ward (back when we drafted him) were the real gems out of those being mid-round draft picks. Brown looks to be something special too which is very surprising out of a 5th round pick. I think I'm the only one not really sold on Sanders yet. There's a few things that bother me about his play; especially embellishing his catches by diving for them. This can be easily fixed though.
I don't think you can praise the FO for 'scouting' Plax and Santonio being projected high first round picks coming out of college. |

You *can* praise them for that - to exactly the same extent as you can criticise them for selecting highly-rated projected picks, which bust. Like Troy Edwards! And Sweed, sort of.

How many years do we have Sanders and Brown signed for?

I agree with the title of this thread. If this team drafted CBs and O-linemen as well as they drafted WRs, they would have won the SB the past 4 years. But maybe they started something last year with the Pouncey draft.

I think my point is still legit because all teams had the same opportunity as the Steelers. Other teams had their hits and misses - you just know about the Steelers ones more because you follow the team.
And we should get credit for first rounders that did succeed because there were definitely first rounders that did not (heyward bey, Williamson, Matt Jones, reggie Williams, etc...) |
