Default Did You Know

I sit back and read post all the time on these boards, where people complain about this draft pick or that pick for what ever reason. I was talking to my dad and we were talking about football and the early days of the steelers.

And we started talking about draft picks when he hit me with this did you know tidbit. I was stunned to know that William Valentine Shakespeare was the steelers first draft pick in 1936. (of course he never played in the NFL) Which was the first NFL draft. He was the third pick in the first round.

For most who don't know he was a standout at Notre Dame. He once kicked a 86yd punt against Pitt and a 70ydr against Navy In the 1935 collegiate season. In the game against Pitt he scored ND only TD.

Just found this to be interesting.....Some of you may not..But just thought I would post it

But he did not just punt....That 80yd punt was in week 4. The same game he scored their only td as they beat pit 9-6. But in week one he threw a 50 yd td pass and the following week he ran for a 20 yd td He was a consensus all American that yr

speaking of american cultural icons being drafted, the steelers also drafted al bundy and the NY yankees drafted a saturday morning cartoon character named yogi bear.

Yeah, knew that. The 1037 pick Mike Basrak was the first to play and he only played two seasons.
