Default NFL, players to give $1 million to 9/11 memorials

NFL, players to give $1 million to 9/11 memorials
By Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
Wednesday, August 31, 2011

The National Football League and the NFL Players Association will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks by donating $1 million to three 9/11 memorials and two charities, including the Flight 93 National Memorial in Somerset County.

The first Sunday of the NFL regular season falls on the anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

The league and its players union will contribute $500,000 to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in Lower Manhattan, and $250,000 to be divided between the Flight 93 National Memorial near Shanksville and the Pentagon Memorial Fund in Washington.

In addition to those $750,000 donations, the league and players union will donate all proceeds from the sale of auction items from games played on Sept. 11. The items will include game-worn autographed jerseys, coaches' and players' hats and commemorative game coins used that day.

The Pittsburgh Steelers open their season at the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 11.
Proceeds of the auction will be divided equally between Tuesday's Children, which provides support and services to those who lost a loved one on 9/11 and to rescue and recovery workers who responded, and MyGoodDeed, which organizes the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance.

The auction is expected to raise at least $250,000.
Those interested in bidding should visit www.NFL.com/Auction.
