i live in indiana, colts fans have been quietly optimistic as rumours were that he was practicing w/ wide receivers on the down low... meanwhile overlooking the glaring fact that there's no way he could be in any kind of playing shape this close to the season starting.
they're basically in the same situation pittsburgh was in last year, i argue that he's a good 4-5 weeks from possibly returning and if they drop most of those games the season is over. let's say they start out 2-4, does it make sense at that point to risk potential harm to him by returning to a lost season? worst-case scenerio, jack lambert retired to turf-toe. peyton didn't properly heal from his surgery namely due to the lockout and the inability to be supervised and advised by team trainers.

Didn't they just pay him $90M?
Colts boards are lighting up like the 4th of july as the panic spreads over these rumors...can't say I blame them Report: Peyton Manning Out For Entire 2011 Season [UPDATE] Colts Refuse To Confirm Report http://www.stampedeblue.com/ Just got email breaking news. Hi Folks, The latest on Colts QB Peyton Manning. Jake Query, a radio host on WNDE in Indianapolis is reporting that sources are telling him that Peyton Manning is out for the year. Query posted this on his twitter feed today: "What I (Query) said: "A source I consider reliable told me he is out for the season." "I do believe that the actual diagnosis is still being determined" Query then followed that with: "I (Query) was also told the 3rd procedure has taken place, either Sun or Monday." Understand that this is not official by any stretch. This is a radio host in Indianapolis (that I don't know much about)saying this is what his sources are telling him. It certainly fits with the worse case scenarios we've been envisioning but it should be stressed that we have no facts or words from the Colts to back this up. |

Well, it seems they've handled the whole Manning thing much like they've handled the whole Crosby debacle (if you follow the Pens, or hockey in general...you know). He had to have know before today that he was having surgery...geez.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Colts' Manning undergoes third neck surgery in 19 months Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning had neck surgery Thursday morning, a league source told NFL Network's Michael Lombardi. The team later confirmed the surgery, Manning's third neck procedure in the last 19 months. The Colts released a statement Thursday on their official site: "As previously stated on Monday, Sept. 5th, Peyton Manning has undergone further testing and consultation with several specialists regarding his rehabilitation. The results of these tests and the consensus of the consultations was that further surgery was warranted. Peyton has undergone this surgery today by having a single level anterior fusion. The surgery was un-eventful. "This procedure is performed regularly throughout the country on persons from all walks of life, including professional football players. Two former Colts players had this same procedure last winter and have fully resumed their careers. Rehabilitation from such surgery is typically an involved process. Therefore, there will be no estimation of a return date at this time. We will keep Peyton on the active roster until we have a clearer picture of his recovery process. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d..._breaking_news

This looks grim
Manning's career may be at risk after his latest spinal procedure The procedure removes the damaged spinal disc -- in this case, the disc between the sixth and seventh cervical vertebrae (C6-7) -- and replaces it with a plate and a spacer. The spacer is made of a medical plastic or of a cadaverous bone graft. The surgeon goes through a small incision at the front of the neck, removes the disc, puts the plate and spacer in place, and makes sure that the nerves are given plenty of room to release. "The common healing time is about a year," said Thaiyananthan. "At two to three months, most patients are just getting out of the collar." All patients who have had this type of procedure will lose movement in all planes -- flexion, extension, and rotation. "It's a chain and one of those is now locked in."... While players have come back in the NFL -- a recent example is Steve Slaton of the Texans -- there are no known quarterbacks, and among the more notable players who didn't return is Sterling Sharpe, whose career was ended after similar surgery. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/201...&sct=hp_t11_a3 |

Jeff Schultz of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution pretty much sums it up for the 2011 Colts
Peyton Manning is Las Vegas. The Colts are Nevada. Welcome to the desert, Indy. http://blogs.ajc.com/jeff-schultz-bl...f_schultz_blog |
