He attended North High School and then Miami University (OH). • Seahawks DT Al Woods spent time on the Steelers’ practice squad during the 2010 season. Woods was added to the Steelers’ practice squad on September 8, 2010 and was claimed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on November 3, 2010. • Seahawks QB Josh Portis played collegiately just south of Pittsburgh at California University (Pa.). COACHING CONNECTIONS • Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin was the defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings in 2006 along with Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell who served as the Vikings’ offensive coordinator. • Seahawks Head Coach Pete Carroll and Steelers running backs coach Kirby Wilson held the same positions on the New England Patriots’ coaching staff from 1997-1999. Seahawks quarterbacks coach Carl Smith was also on the Patriots’ staff from 1997-1999, coaching quarterbacks and tight ends. • Steelers S Troy Polamalu • Steelers defensive backs coach Carnell Lake was a teammate of Seahawks linebackers coach Ken Norton Jr. at UCLA from 1985-1987. • Carroll and Wilson also held the same positions at the University of Southern California in 2001. Seahawks assistant defensive backs coach Rocky Seto was also on the Trojans’ coaching staff in 2011, serving as a graduate assistant. • Carroll also coached with Steelers assistant head coach/ defensive line coach John Mitchell at the University of Arkansas in 1977 under legendary head coach Lou Holtz. Seahawks assistant offensive line coach Pat Ruel was also on that staff in 1977. • Steelers offensive coordinator Bruce Arians and Seahawks quarterbacks coach Carl Smith coached together for the Cleveland Browns from 2001-2003. Steelers linebackers coach Keith Butler was on that same staff from 2001-2002. • Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau coached with Seahawks assistant offensive line coach Pat Ruel for the Buffalo Bills in 2003. WHAT TO LOOK FOR PITTSBURGH TEAM NOTES • Pittsburgh looks for its ninth straight win in home openers.• The Steelers look to improve to 29-13 in home openers since 1970.• The Steelers are looking to improve to 9-8 all-time against the Seattle Seahawks.• Pittsburgh looks to improve to 7-2 at home against the Seahawks.• The Steelers look to win their fourth straight home game (including the postseason.• Pittsburgh will look to improve to 25-8 at home in the regularseason during the Mike Tomlin era (2007-present). PITTSBURGH INDIVIDUAL NOTES Head Coach Mike Tomlin • Looks to improve his record in home openers to 5-0. Tomlin is the only head coach in Steelers’ history to win his first four home openers. QB Ben Roethlisberger • Needs five touchdown passes to equal 150 for his career, becoming only the second Steelers’ quarterback to reach the mark (Terry Bradshaw). • Looking to go 5-0 in home openers. TE Heath Miller • After recording three receptions for 42 yards in week one, needs11 receptions to reach 300 for his career, becoming the seventhplayer in franchise history to reach the mark. LB James Harrison • Needs 4.5 sacks to tie Greg Lloyd (53.5) for the sixth-highest career total in the history of the Steelers. SS Troy Polamalu • One interception shy of tying Jack Lambert (28) for the ninth-most in Steelers’ history.• Needs one interception return for a touchdown to tie Dwayne Woodruff, Deshea Townsend and Tony Campagno (3) for the third-most in franchise history.• Needs 41 yards to surpass Chad Scott (368) for the ninth-most interception return yards in a career in Steelers’ history.
