Well, if Gilbert turns out to be the real deal they just have to draft 3 more

He looked like he has considerable physical tools and talent, now he just needs time to develope. He did look like he was struggling with the playbook a little bit. The sack in question, it looked to me like a blown assignment-- he zigged when he should have zagged and did not know who he was supposed to pick up until it was too late.

Other than that, he did a great job picking the speed rushers Seattle tried stacking up on that side, and he did give a nice push to the running game.

Yup...but if they had done this a few years back the line wouldn't be the shit that you love today, and Ben wouldn't be running for his life weekly, and Mendy wouldn't be getting Stood up at the one foot line...homer

If the Steelers had drafted 4 more linemen in early rounds than they have in recent years, then there would be a lot more players that they wouldn't have now, like Hood, Mendenhall, Timmons, Woodley, Sanders, or Wallace. Of course, it would have been nice if they had clairvoyance and realized that Limas Sweed was never going to put it all together, but taking Sweed where they did at the time was the right move. Shit happens.

Good post.
Where we draft almost every year, we're not going to get a shot at too many stud linemen. You're not always going to have a player like Pouncey fall to you.

Some people act like Pouncey is the only lineman they've drafted in the past 10 years, like they're not even making an effort. As I jokingly said in another thread ... maybe we should tank a few seasons so we can draft some top linemen.

other than punters and placekickers, there are several positions that aretraditionally NEVER overdrafted in the 1st round. These are interior linemen (guards and centers), safeties, and tight ends. the thinking being is that you can always find good ones in the latter rounds.

yet look how they fare when they 'reach" or take one early (assuming they are the top 1 or 2 at their respective position.

faneca, miller, pouncey, polamalu... all HOF/pro-bowl/all pro calibur players.

yet the ubergenius internet fans would prefer us to reach for the 7th ranked LT or 5th ranked CB in the 1st round and pass on one of the highest ranked DT/DE's?LB.

i guess they dont realize that the steelers typically take the BPA as opposed to reaching for immediate need (which rookies cant fill).

theres something to be said for knowing the steelers way. it wins championships...

which ive seen clowns on this board try to minimize.

Tackle and a guard in the first two rounds... the right side of their line, in fact. Not working out too well so far, I'd say.

P.S. - Oh yeah, and Derek Sherrod, who was available when the Steelers picked, and for whom many on these boards were clamoring, has been a dud thus far, and inactive for both Green Bay games. Cam Heyward has played, and played well in substitution.
