Default NFL Gossip and rumors

CBS.SportsLine.com narrows in on the recent rumors and gossip surrounding players, coaches and teams.

Team by Team
Arizona Cardinals Updated:06/08/2006
The Arizona Republic reports that the Cardinals are one of several teams that have shown some interest in Pro Bowl cornerback Ty Law, who is reportedly asking for an $8 million-$10 million signing bonus and a long-term contract.

Baltimore Ravens Updated:06/08/2006
Safety Ed Reed did not practice for the second straight day and watched all the drills with his helmet in hand. According to the Baltimore Sun, Coach Brian Billick said that Reed's lack of work is not contract-related, even though Reed is in the final year of his deal.

Carolina Panthers Updated:06/01/2006
The Charlotte Observer reports that a prominent national preseason magazine has picked the Carolina Panthers to win the Super Bowl for the second straight year. Street & Smith's Pro Football Yearbook has the Panthers defeating the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLI in Miami.

Chicago Bears Updated:06/08/2006
According to the Chicago Tribune, running back Thomas Jones and linebacker Lance Briggs didn't attend Tuesday's organized team activity, the first of 11 such team gatherings through June 22. Both players did attend the mandatory three-day mini-camp, but were demoted to the second team, which sent a message to the players who attend the OTAs and to those who don't.

Dallas Cowboys Updated:06/08/2006
There are rumors spreading that Greg Ellis doesn't want his contract restructured and would like to be traded. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram, however, reports that Ellis will not hold out from training camp and plans to fulfill his contract, even though this will be his last season with the Cowboys.

Detroit Lions Updated:06/01/2006
Left guard Ross Verba signed a one-year contract with Detroit and was immediately placed with the No. 1 offense during drills. According to the Michigan Live, Verba played for offensive line coach Larry Beightol (in Green Bay) and played against head coach Rod Marinelli's defensive line when in Tampa Bay, so the Lions coaches know him pretty well.

Green Bay Packers Updated:06/08/2006
The Green Bay Packers' practice Tuesday morning featured the first head-to-head duel between kicker candidates Billy Cundiff and Dave Rayner. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the duel opened with an extra-point try and then each player got seven cracks at splitting the uprights from distances of 24, 29, 34, 39, 44, 52 and 43 yards. Cundiff went 7 for 8, missing only from 52 yards, and Rayner went 6 for 8, missing from 43 and 52 yards.

Houston Texans Updated:05/30/2006
According to the Houston Chronicle, the Texans will continue to interview more candidates for their general manager's vacancy. Bob McNair received permission from the New Orleans Saints to interview Rick Mueller, their director of player personnel. Mueller has spent the past five seasons with the Saints and has overseen all aspects of their scouting department. Before joining the Saints, Mueller spent six seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Indianapolis Colts Updated:06/06/2006
Robert Mathis is working under a one-year, $2.096 million contract he signed as a restricted free agent, but it appears that the Colts are trying to work out a multiyear contract with their pass-rush standout. The Indianapolis Star reports that Mathis has emerged as a playmaker for the Colts' defense and a special teams standout, despite playing almost exclusively in passing situations. Now, the Colts will try to maximize his talents by moving Raheem Brock to tackle and starting Mathis at left end.

Kansas City Chiefs Updated:06/08/2006
As time ticks down to next month's opening of training camp, the Chiefs remain unsure whether Priest Holmes will be with them. The Kansas City Star reports that the Chiefs have patiently waited for Holmes to determine whether his neck condition would allow him to play this season and they’ve made no move for a back other than to answer the phone last month when New Orleans were offering Michael Bennett.

Miami Dolphins Updated:05/30/2006
Ricky Williams signed a one-year contract Sunday worth $240,000 to play for the Toronto Argonauts. According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the Dolphins also received written assurances from all parties, including CFL Commissioner Tom Wright, that Williams would return to the Dolphins after the season ends in November. Williams, who owes the Dolphins $8.6 million, will be the highest-paid running back in the CFL.

New England Patriots Updated:06/08/2006
With $10 million worth of cap room and uncertainty at corner, the Cardinals have joined the teams hoping to acquire cornerback Ty Law. According to the Boston Herald, Law's agent Kevin Poston, could be using the Cardinals to create the illusion of leverage to drive up Law's market value.

New Orleans Saints Updated:06/01/2006
The Saints aren't expected to release any players in the coming days, but according to the New Orleans Times, one of their veteran safeties could eventually be released or traded as well as Michael Bennett.

New York Giants Updated:06/08/2006
Center Shaun O'Hara, who turns 29 this month, could be at his last offseason workout with the Giants. He's the only offensive starter without a multiyear contract, according to the New York Post and will make $1.25 million in this final year of the three-year deal he signed in 2003.

Philadelphia Eagles Updated:06/06/2006
When the Eagles gathered for their first voluntary practice, fullback Thomas Tapeh (hip surgery) and safety J.R. Reid (nerve damage, foot) took snaps in both the team and individual sessions. According to the Delaware County Times, cornerback Lito Sheppard still hasn’t practiced after surgery for a broken left ankle and running back Correll Buckhalter remains sidelined with a torn ACL. Donovan McNabb almost joined the injury list as he appeared to jam a finger on his throwing hand during a center exchange with Hank Fraley.

Pittsburgh Steelers Updated:05/30/2006
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, halfback Duce Staley and centers Jeff Hartings and Chukky Okobi all agreed at the club's request to take less money this season than what they were scheduled to earn. Linebacker Joey Porter, however, will not participate in the Steelers' spring workouts.

San Francisco 49ers Updated:06/06/2006
It appears as though Cody Pickett's future with the 49ers will depend on how well he can play receiver. Pickett is currently the team's No. 2 quarterback, but according to the Sacramento Bee, that will change as soon as Trent Dilfer is cleared to play after having knee surgery earlier this year. Pickett, started two games at quarterback after Alex Smith and Ken Dorsey were knocked out with injuries, but he threw two interceptions with no touchdowns and finished with a 28.3 passer rating.

Tennessee Titans Updated:06/08/2006
Steve McNair was the last remaining member of the roster since the organization moved from Houston in 1997. The Nashville City Paper reports that he was traded to Baltimore for a fourth-round pick, which could escalate to a third-rounder based on performance. The trade is contingent upon McNair passing the Ravens’ physical.

I heard the Titans haven't been willing to negotiate or offer a contract extension to head coach Jeff Fisher who I believe is in the last year of his present deal. No surprise there seeing how they treated Steve McNair.

Believe it or not I heard Pat Kirwin say this past week that Fisher will end up in Baltimore if Billick and the Rats end up 8-8 or worse.
