Default Ward unlikely to play; Other injury updates

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward is "highly unlikely" to play Sunday against New England because of an ankle injury, a league source told NFL Network's Albert Breer on Friday.

Ward, who did not practice all week, is officially listed as questionable after telling NFL Network on Wednesday that he did not suffer the dreaded high ankle sprain and pointing at the absence of a walking boot as an indication of his progress.

"It will take a lot," Ward said Wednesday when asked about potentially missing the New England game. "I don't particularly like missing any ball games. But at the same time, you have to be smart. For me, I'm going to work my tail off to get back on the field."

Linebacker James Harrison, who has been sidelined since suffering a broken eye socket on Oct 2, will not play again. The Steelers also ruled out defensive tackle Chris Hoke (neck), guard Doug Legursky (toe) and linebacker Jason Worilds (quad). Linebacker James Farrior (calf) was listed as questionable.

Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo (knee) is expected to have a shot to play, a league source told Breer. Mayo has been limited in practice this week.

Patriots defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth (back), running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis (toe) and offensive tackle Sebastian Vollmer (back) were all listed as questionable after being limited in practice this week.

Rookie cornerback Ras-I Dowling (hip) was listed as doubtful after missing the last two practices.

Wow. Great news...I noticed a considerable drop in offensive production after Hines Ward's injury last game, so this worries me. But hey, we have young guns. Guess it's time for them to prove there spot.

Thanks for the update!

No, that was entirely sarcastic. I added the three periods for that reason, but adding extra periods nowadays is a trend.

Damn bath salts!

This could work to the Steelers advantage. The pats seem to know the Steelers tendencies since they play them so much and have a ton of film on them. With the lot of new guys that will be on the field this Sunday those tendencies won't be there. They don't have film on any of the new guys so they won't have any keys to tip them off to much. In a way for this game only I like that we have a bunch of new guys on the field. I think it just might be what is needed. Now lets hope the new guys studied the playbook and that everyone is on the same page.

This could be a blessing in disguise, not that I don't like Hines but maybe Arians will actually do something different with his gameplan with a major component of the offense on the bench (probably not though)...

If you'd ever broken or dislocated a toe, you'd understand. I dislocated my big toe when I was a teenager (better known as "turf toe") and I couldn't stand up on my own. I had zero balance. It wasn't painful, at least not after the initial injury, but it took a long time to heal and was the most physically limiting injury I've ever had. Walking was just out of the question for at least a month.
