Default Pittsburgh Steelers team report: Hines Ward injury minor

Pittsburgh Steelers team report: Hines Ward injury minor
Gerry Dulac Sporting News

PITTSBURGH—The Pittsburgh Steelers were down to three wide receivers against the Baltimore Ravens because Hines Ward (stinger) and veteran Arnaz Battle (hamstring) were injured during the game and Emmanuel Sanders was inactive because of the death of his mother.

Because of that, veteran Jerricho Cotchery was the slot receiver when the team used three wideouts and even lined as the flanker in most two-wide packages.

Coach Mike Tomlin described Ward’s injury as minor. Ward was kept out of the game after he was hit in the second quarter because he had concussion-like symptoms.

Sanders is expected back this week.

With teams focusing their attention on Mike Wallace, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has been looking for Antonio Brown, who has 21 catches and two 100-yard games in the past three weeks.

Brown is very quick and elusive, but he has also shown good hands in making several difficult catches.

Notes: ILB James Farrior has a calf-muscle injury that caused him to miss the past two games, but it’s possible he could return against the Bengals.

Farrior went through a full practice last Thursday to push his injured calf, but then backed off on Friday and was limited in his participation.

In his absence, veteran Larry Foote has played very well. Foote is smart and takes good angles to the ball, allowing him to get in good position to disrupt run plays. The problem is, the team is getting little production from LB Lawrence Timmons, who shifted back to the inside position after playing the previous four games at right outside linebacker for injured James Harrison.

Timmons signed a big contract extension before the season, but has not provided the type of splash plays the team has been seeking.
