Default Turnover secures Steelers' win

Turnover secures Steelers' win

A turnover, of all things, by William Gay, of all players, secured a crucial victory for the Steelers this afternoon, a 24-17 win over the Cincinnati Bengals at Paul Brown Stadium.

The win gives the Steelers a 7-3 record in the AFC North and dropped the Bengals to 6-3. Both trail Baltimore, which is playing later today at Seattle.

Gay picked off an Andy Dalton pass late in the fourth quarter after the Bengals had advanced to the Steelers' 25. It was only the Steelers third interception of the season.

Gay has resurrected his career with his play this season, first by taking the starting cornerback job away from Bryant McFadden and then by performing at a level that has made the Steelers one of the toughest teams in the NFL to pass against.

The Steelers defense did an excellent job of throttling Dalton all day, particularly in the first half. He finished with 15 completions in 30 attempts for 170 yards. He threw two touchdowns, was intercepted twice and had a passer rating of 61.8.

Ben Roethlisberger was the offensive difference for the Steelers. He threw for 245 yards, 21 for 33, with one touchdown and one interception, which was not his fault.

But in windy conditions the Steelers utilized the run more than they have in the recent past. Against a Bengals defense that had been strong against the run, they got yards grudgingly --30 carries 105 yards -- but the ground game was productive in the final touchdown drive.

The Steelers took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter but the Bengals did not falter. They eventually tied the game midway through the third quarter but the Steelers came right back on the next possession to move 76 yards on 11 plays, six runs, five passing attempts, with Rashard Mendenhall scoring for the 9.

The Steelers are off next week.
