SAGINAW — A fan of Saginaw native LaMarr Woodley, Saginaw resident Joyce Terry celebrates the Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker’s tackles.

But Friday, she had a different reason to celebrate Woodley.

“The things that I got today were things I needed yesterday,” Terry said. “He’s helped me immensely, it’s a huge blessing. I appreciate what LaMarr Woodley has done. Keep up the good work, LaMarr.”

By 10:30 Fred Harvey, Operation and Program Director at the Civitan Center, estimated that 100-150 people through the Center. This is the third year that Woodley will donate basic needs items to families so that they will have napkins, plates, cups, forks and spoons to set their table for Thanksgiving dinner. Terry, along with 500 other Saginaw County families, was provided with napkins, plates, cups, forks, spoons, aluminum foil, dish detergent, trash bags, toothpaste, paper towels, toilet paper, laundry detergent and hand soap in a giveaway at the Civitan Recreation Center.

All are items ineligible for purchase with food benefits and Woodley, a Saginaw High graduate, declined to say how much the donation cost.

“It’s important to give back,” Woodley said. “Thanksgiving is coming up, Christmas is coming up, and hopefully this lets them keep a little more money in their pockets with the holidays coming.”

Woodley has run the giveaway annually for three years, and he said he is especially grateful to the volunteers who assist the giveaway to run smoothly.

Woodley’s family members were among the volunteers, and he also said Sheilda Braddock, president and CEO of the First Ward Community Center was integral to organizing the giveaway.

Braddock said Woodley attended the community center as a youth, and that is why he chose the Civitan Recreation Center as the location of the giveaway.”

“After school programs play a huge role for kids,” Braddock said. “He was in this building as a child.”

Braddock said the giveaway is especially helpful considering new limitations of several state-funded programs, including a new, four-year limit on cash assistance, and high unemployment in the area.

The giveaway was open to all Saginaw County residents, they simply needed to show identification at the door proving they lived the area.

“It helps to supploement income,” Braddock said. “It’s good, today is a Thanksgiving as well.”

Woodley signed a six-year, $61 million contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers earlier this year.
