I really feel like this is one of those cases where people feel pissed off about a policy (NAFTA) and they instinctively want to blame the party they aren't affiliated with. But both parties are equally culpable. They are both looking out for the multinationals.

Red face Re: Bush Administration Quietly Plans NAFTA Super Highway...

Guys,

Let's just face reality...I don't care if you're a elephant or a jackass.....Most, if not all politicians have no idea or concern about what the people want. They are in politics for themselves and not because they want to be a servant to the public....You do the best you can as an American to vote according to your ideas or beliefs...Then after they get your vote and become elected they totally change directions politically on important issues to please Washington instead of the constituents that voted them into office.
What gets really old is all of the ignorance of the American people who just continue to point the finger from one party to the next....The Democrats blame the Republicans and vice versa....They are all to blame.....Perhaps some more and others less.....

Great post Archer,

I guess its second nature to have these debates develop into a Dems v Repubs debate - but I dont feel that is what its really all about.

Over in the UK, we have the same thing - people are dying of preventable diseases in our hospitals, and all the useless politicians can do is try and score points of the opposition - "If the previous administration hadn't left us in such a bad situation......."

I think we all deserve a little better than what amounts to a school yard p*ssing contest between the people we elect.

There are some hugely important subjects up for debate each and every day - stuff that directly affects me and you - and alot of us fall into the trap of treating it like backing your football team when they are going through a rough patch.

If left to their own devices most Governments will try and screw you, it doesn't matter if they are Republican, Democrats, Conservative or Labour - most of them are out to improve their lot in life - if we want them to do our bidding (as they as paid to do) then they should be held accountable for every decision they make.

Wow...maybe it's too obvious, so let me try again.

NAFTA...North American Free Trade Agreement...create BLOC of Canada/US/Mexico to compete globally with seperate European and Pacific Rim Bloc's.

This highway is going to be used to ship goods FROM THE FAR EAST through Mexico and into the US. Who gives a shit about who signed off on this, or the unions being cut out of the deal? The entire irony lies in the fact that goods that were SUPPOSED to be manufactured cheaply in Mexico (the central tenet of the whole reason NAFTA was enacted in the first place) are actually being manufactured in China. This defeats the whole purpose of NAFTA.

NAFTA should be repealed immediately...

Suitanim,

I totally understood what you were talking about.....And I agree what a mess, maybe more of a mess than we could ever imagine......And you are right about who cares who signed off on this....That is the whole point that Livinginthepast and I were trying to make.

Thank you. That was, is, and will always be the only thing I have to say about this absolutely horrible POS legislation that was force-fed down the American public's throat.

IMHO, that was the reason for NAFTA on paper. It sounded nice and gave the politicians a reason to pat themselves on the back in spite of much dissent. But if you look at who essentially wrote and lobbied for NAFTA legislation you'll find gigantic multinational corporations. They didn't care about Pac Rim vs. N. America vs. Europe. They are global and just more favorable market conditions. Agreement like NAFTA and groups like the WTO force nations to operate their economies at the lowest common denominator.

So I guess that I am not going to try to hold my breath until our government repeals it. Its here to stay because corporations pay the campaign bills. IMHO.

But, by that same measure, if we can't believe ANYTHING they pitch us, even things that sound reasonably well thought out and rational at the time, then what is the point of even having a government in any form?

I don't think that this was what anybody originally intended to happen, but economic realities are the hardest things to predict, and always make the strangest bedfellows...
