No plans to remove 'Immaculate Reception' statue from airport

By Tom Fontaine
PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Friday, November 18, 2011

It appears Franco Harris -- rather, his statue -- always will have a place at Pittsburgh International Airport.

The life-sized statue of Harris making the "Immaculate Reception" isn`t going anywhere, airport spokesman Jeff Martinelli said. It stands next to a George Washington statue near escalators in the airport`s Airside Terminal.

"It is there to recognize a great moment in Pittsburgh sport history. We have no plans to move it," Martinelli said, adding the airport hasn`t received complaints.

Harris has come under widespread criticism for support of fired Penn State football coach Joe Paterno in the wake of a child sex abuse charges against former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.

Harris temporarily stepped down as board chairman of The Pittsburgh Promise scholarship late Thursday, and he and The Meadows Racetrack & Casino in North Strabane severed ties earlier this week. Harris had served as a spokesman for the casino.

Last time i checked, the Penn State stuff hasnt' even made its way through the courts, let alone all of the facts and indictments, etc.
Yet, the looney American media, has already tried the case and found Paterno and everyone else guilty aready, thus making Franco look like he supports child molesters. Its so ridiculous, it makes me crazy mad.

Paterno makes a huge mistake, reports what he hears to the university and figures he has done his civic duty, doesn't follow up when the school doesn't go further. He got fired, and is paying a price. Paterno and those at Pen State who participated in this cover up sicken me.....but what the hell does that have to do with Franco, he supports a coach who he played for in the late 60's early 70's. I wonder if all these folks calling for Franco's head have skeletons in there closet.
Supporting someone in the darkest moments in life, is called FRIENDSHIP. You don't have to agree with them, you can be "disgusted" by them, but you support them because they are friends, parents sons etc. People really need to get a life.

This is such a non-factor that it makes my brain hurt just reading it. How is this a story and why was it even questioned about the statue? Whatever side of the fence you stand on about Franco's comments what does that have to do with the IR? OJ did something much worse, so should we go back and strike his 2,003 yard season from the records?

If there are no complaints then where the hell did this reporting come up with this "story?" Sounds like a reporting trying to stir up the pot and get the "scoop" first.

as you all know, there are plenty of sports fans that are anti-Western, PA anti-Steelers, anti-Pitt and anti-Penn state so anything that is negative of any nature they will take the first jump at so it is no surprise that when a former Steelers great and Penn Stater supports Paterno, the "hater bandwagon" begins to rear its ugly license plate

and just in case, I'll go on the record as stating that if facts present themselves that Paterno did NOT do the right thing (which will always be a cloudy subject IMHO) then I'll go along and say shame on you, Paterno. Until then - who the heck is anyone to start judging.

They were probably speculating about this because there has been talk of removing the Paterno statue from Penn State.

It's stupid to even bring this up though; Franco (IMO) has acted like an idiot throughout this whole thing, but I really don't think that many people even know (or care) about his stupid crusade to win Paterno's job back. Sorry Franco, but if Paterno willingly allowed a pedophile to go about his disgusting business (and so far, a lot of the evidence indicates that he did), that DOES tarnish his legacy, no matter how much PA might love the Nittany Lions. What's so troublesome here though is that Harris and so many other Penn State diehards seem more concerned with Paterno's legacy than Sandusky's numerous victims.

But anway, the statue is more about the moment in Steelers' history than it is about Harris. He made an amazing play of course and that can't be denied (although that asshole George Atkinson will certainly keep trying whenever NFLN gives him facetime), but the play and resulting win marked a turnaround in franchise history.
