Default Bengals Trade QB Dave Ragone

Bengals trade Ragone for pick

June 20, 2006

Posted: 10 a.m.

The Bengals got down to their four training-camp quarterbacks Tuesday when they traded Dave Ragone to the Rams less than a month after picking him up on waivers.

The Bengals got an undisclosed draft pick in return, most likely a late-rounder, and are now left with Carson Palmer, Anthony Wright, Doug Johnson, and rookie free agent Erik Meyer.

Ragone is reunited with one of his college mentors, Rams head coach Scott Linehan, Louisville?s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach during Ragone?s run as three-time Conference USA Offensive Player.

Ragone had been released by the Texans last month and the Bengals claimed him May 24. But he got very little work behind Wright and Johnson in the spring workouts and he was destined to get little work at training camp.

Ragone joins Marc Bulger, Gus Frerotte, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Jeff Smoker in the Rams' derby. It looks like he'll have to beat out Fitzpatrick, the second-year Harvard product who engineered a come-back victory last season.
I have to say that's a pretty nice move by the Bengals front office...pick a guy up off the waiver wires and a month later trade him off for a draft pick. It sounds like something I'd do in Madden.

Why would the Rams do something like that?

Has their QB situation changed since Ragone was available on waivers?

Very weird.

even a 7th round pick for Ragone...would be a bizarre move...very strange
