Default Foster in, Woodley, Sanders out for Steelers

Foster in, Woodley, Sanders out for Steelers

By Scott Brown
PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Thursday, December 8, 2011

Starting right guard Ramon Foster is likely in Thursday night when the Steelers host the Browns. Outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley and wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders are out for the 8:20 p.m. game.

Woodley (hamstring) and Sanders (foot) didn't practice this week.

Foster, who sprained his ankle last Sunday, practiced both days, and he is listed as probable for when the Steelers and Browns meet for the first time this season.

In addition to Woodley and Sanders, wide receiver Arnaz Battle (hamstring), running back Jonathan Dwyer (foot) and outside linebacker Chris Carter (hamstring) won't play against the Browns.

The Steelers listed 15 players as probable for the game, including quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (thumb), strong safety Troy Polamalu (knee) and center Maurkice Pouncey (ankle).

Ward salutes 'positive' athletes

Wide receiver Hines Ward has formed an all-star team to promote the sharing of life skills among young athletes.

Former volleyball star Kerri Walsh, former women soccer greats Julie Foudy and Kristine Lilley and San Francisco Giants third baseman Pedro Sandoval are taking part in Positive Athlete with Ward.

Ward is leading a campaign in which 25 kids from WPIAL schools will be recognized as "Positive High School Athletes of the Year."

Brown receives honor

Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week yesterday.

Brown returned a punt 60 yards for a touchdown in the Steelers' 35-7 win over the Bengals. It was the Steelers' first regular-season punt return since 2006.

Brown is second in the AFC in punt returns with 12.2 yards per return.

HOW THEY STACK UP

Browns running back Peyton Hillis vs. Steelers linebackers

BROWNS RB HILLIS: One year after emerging as one of the NFL's top power runners, Hillis is a shell of himself because of hamstring problems that have slowed his season. If Hillis suits up tonight, it will be the first time he's played in three straight games this year. After missing five in a row, Hillis has rushed for 65 and 45 yards in the past two weeks and has just 321 yards and two TDs this year. Contrast that to last year when he gained 1,177 yards and scored 11 TDs. If Hillis can't get going Thursday night, it will make the Browns one-dimensional and give the Steelers defense a chance to feast on second-year QB Colt McCoy.

STEELERS LINEBACKERS: This appears to be a classic mismatch. After starting off slowly in stopping the run, the Steelers have improved and rank seventh in the NFL in that category; the Browns are 30th in rushing yards per game. Inside linebackers James Farrior (73 tackles) and Lawrence Timmons (62) could be busy Friday night trying to keep the Browns in second-and-long and third-and-long situations. The run defense improvement could be attributed to Timmons moving back to his accustomed inside spot after spelling James Harrison on the outside for several games.

ADVANTAGE: STEELERS

Hillis' misery should only continue as he'll encounter little running room against the Steelers. Chalk it up to a lost season for the Madden cover boy, who might be in his last season with the Browns. Despite early season letdowns, the Steelers haven't allowed a running back to reach 60 yards in the past six games, a nice little run that should last for another week.

Not a good season for Sanders with injuries and the family tragedy. Hopefully he can have some meaningful contribution down the stretch and into the playoffs.

Sucks about Sanders, but thank dog for small miracles and starting the same offensive line for only the 2nd time this season.
