Default Big Ben and Holmes visit Steelers' offices

Only eight days after the motorcycle accident in which he sustained facial injuries that required seven hours of surgery, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger visited the team's complex Tuesday for the first time since the June 12 incident.

Roethlisberger wore a hood, to conceal his injuries, into the team's offices on the south side of the city, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported. He met with some club officials and assistant coaches, and picked up his mail and some athletic gear, but did not take part in any physical activities.

The visit came one day after Roethlisberger was cited for not having a license to operate a motorcycle and for not wearing a helmet, and issued $388 in fines and fees. The woman who was driving the car with which Roethlisberger collided was also cited for failing to yield.

The youngest quarterback in NFL history to lead his team to a Super Bowl championship, Roethlisberger is recovering from multiple facial injuries. They include a broken jaw, broken nose, damage to several teeth, a number of lacerations and a concussion. Surgeons inserted plates into Roethlisberger's face to accelerate the healing process, but the team has not issued a timetable for his return to the field.

Steelers officials remain optimistic that Roethlisberger will be able to work in training camp and will be available for the team's regular-season opener against the Miami Dolphins on Sept. 7.

The other Pittsburgh player in the news recently for an off-field incident, first-round draft choice Santonio Holmes, was also at the Steelers' headquarters Tuesday to meet with team officials and assistant coaches.

The former Ohio State wide receiver, expected to contribute to the Steelers' passing game as a rookie, was arrested early Monday morning on charges of domestic violence and simple assault against the mother of his youngest child. He pleaded not guilty to the charges on Monday afternoon and arrived in Pittsburgh early Tuesday morning for a meeting that had been arranged before the incident.

"I understand that being a Pittsburgh Steeler carries along with it the demands for responsible behavior off the field. I want to apologize for the negative attention that my arrest on Monday has brought upon the Pittsburgh Steelers organization, especially in light of my previous arrest in May," Holmes said in a statement released by the team.

Because of a league rule that prohibits rookies from participating in all but one minicamp until their college term ends, Holmes missed much of Pittsburgh's offseason program. He is in Pittsburgh for a crash course to better familiarize himself with the Steelers' offense, and did some on-field work Tuesday morning.

The Monday incident marked the second arrest for Holmes since the Steelers chose him in the NFL draft. He was arrested in Miami Beach, Fla., during Memorial Day weekend and charged with disorderly conduct. The arrests could, under terms of the NFL personal conduct policy, bring Holmes under league scrutiny.

It is not yet known how long Holmes will remain in Pittsburgh for the one-on-one tutelage from assistant coaches.
