Default Emmanuel Sanders looking for his opportunities

Emmanuel Sanders looking for his opportunities

By Scott Brown
PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Sunday, January 1, 2012

Emmanuel Sanders is slated to play today in Cleveland, and it would be an understatement to say that the second-year receiver has been looking forward to the 4:15 p.m. game.

"I haven't felt this good in about five, six weeks," said Sanders, who has missed the Steelers' past three games and five of the past seven because of foot and knee problems. "I'm excited about getting in on the fun, but I'm having fun just sitting back and watching these guys."

Mike Wallace and Antonio Brown, two of Sanders' closest friends on the team, recently were named Pro Bowl starter and Steelers MVP, respectively. Each has gone over 1,000 yards receiving.

Sanders has just 21 catches for 274 and two touchdowns following a promising rookie campaign. He said he hasn't felt left behind while watching the exploits of Wallace and Brown. Sanders said his primary goal -- winning the Super Bowl -- is still in play and he can help the Steelers as they eye a lengthy postseason run.

"I know my opportunity's going to come," Sanders said.

Nothing personal

If the Browns are looking for payback on James Harrison, the player charged with neutralizing the Steelers' outside linebacker said it will be a waste of their time.

"Personal vendettas and things like that detract from your team having the best chance to win," Pro Bowl left tackle Joe Thomas said. "We're not going to do anything that isn't going to try to help us win the game."

Harrison leveled Colt McCoy when the teams met Dec. 8. The helmet-to-helmet hit left the Browns quarterback concussed and ended his season.

McCoy is the third Browns player since last season who has sustained a concussion after being hit by Harrison.

When asked last week if he considers Harrison a dirty player, Browns center Alex Mack paused.

"I mean, he's getting fined," Mack said. "Do what you can do to play a violent game, but you don't have to injure people."

Extra points

Hines Ward's pursuit of 1,000 career catches has been well documented. It ends, at least for this season, today. Ward needs five catches to become the eighth player in NFL history with at least 1,000 receptions. ... Tight end Heath Miller needs two catches to pass Lynn Swann and move into fourth place on the Steelers' all-time receptions list. ... The AFC North is the only division with three teams that have at least nine wins. The AFC North has allowed fewer points (1,061) than any other division.

He's got a lot of talent, he just needs to build a chemistry with Ben heading into Denver and he'll be a factor on offense. Teams have been keeping an eye on Wallace, and now their noticing Brown. If Sanders can step it up and make some catches, defense's will be overwhelmed.

Well, he's a professional football player. Nothing average about that.

For real?

He just hasn't got the opportunities and when he has he makes solid catches just not the burner catches we see from Wallace or the mind blowing ones from Brown. Solid catches is nothing "average" Hines Ward built his career on those types of catches.

He doesn't look like anything special out there like Wallace or Brown. And as the 'best route runner' out of the young money crew, he doesn't seem to be getting open very often. I know he's been going through injuries but this season was about a big letdown for him. Cotchery seems to be taking his spot on the depth chart.

A screwed up foot is going to make other players move ahead of you on the depth chart and to make it harder to get open through the course of a season...

Let's focus on the real issue ... which is the present and future ... not the past. Let's all hope he makes a difference during our playoff run! If he wants his opportunities, what better time to shine?

I say "GO SANDERS!!!"
