Default Slowed by Age and Injuries, Steelers Still Have an Iron Grip

Nice read in The New York Times

An odd thing happened on the way to N.F.L. irrelevance. By the end of the season, the Steelers were back to their familiar perch atop the league’s defenses, having changed nothing about their style but allowing the fewest yards and points — fewer than they allowed last season — in a season in which the dominant story line was often the absence of defense. For the fifth time in 11 seasons, the Steelers have the top defense, an astonishing stranglehold on opposing offenses that have rapidly changed with each season from balance to downfield bombs. ...

The rest of the playoffs will be about the quarterbacking precision of the Packers, the Patriots and the Saints. The Steelers will be about James Harrison and Troy Polamalu hunting down quarterbacks. Same as it ever was. ...

The Steelers have forestalled the march of time by building through the draft, so each player is familiar with the system by the time he becomes a starter. It will happen against Sunday. Farrior, who turned 37 on Friday, said he was excited to see safety Ryan Mundy, drafted in 2008, in place of Clark.

“We’re going to keep going on until we can’t go anymore,” Farrior said.

They are not done yet.

I didn't know Aaron Smith was a nose tackle, but otherwise a good read. New York writers might be preparing their readership for Plan B in case (as I suspect) the Giants make an early exit. The Steelers might just be Plan B.

ed b. stated the other day that not even the steelers defense of the 70'd did this which i find not only amazing but somewhat shocking.

not so shocking is warren sapp's defense hasnt come close to doing it either. his opinion is old, tired, and done.

Any by the end of the run in 1979 that 70s defense was clearly dropping off

But an 8 year run (Green Bay 1960 - 1967/Pittsburgh 1972-1979/San Francisco 1981 - 1989) is about as long a period in which the core of a team stays on top

By that measure 2004 - 2011 indicates the curtain is coming down on this group

Well, that's all well and good but I just watched ESPN and they listed all of the injuries we have and we have enough people on that list to add a 33rd team to the league.

if you think about football of the 1960's & 1970's, pre the pass-n-tab stuff you see today (Montana/ Marino into the present), there were several teams that prided themselves on defense, and having the top-rated defensive squad was very competitive:
the Colts of Billy Ray & Bubba Smith with Mike Curtis ~ the Fearsome Foursome ~ the Raiders of Sistrunk, Hendricks, and Tatum ~ the Orange Crush of Alzado, Gradishar & Jackson ~ the Purple People Eaters

hell, if a present-day team had a squad dubbed 'the Doomsday Defense', or 'Monsters of the Midway', Ms. Goodell would strip them of all future draft-picks, fine them $1 million, and make them play in the Big East of the NCAA:
she doesn't WANT defenses to stop the scoring onslaught

hopefully not.since 2006 our secondary has completely flipped with exception of polamalu (id consider ike a tweener between starter and reserve).

with exception of hampton the DL is all new and all new LB's with exception of farrior.

no doubt hampton, farrior, and polamalu have been the core of our succedd especially when it comes to a dominant run defense.

hopefully we remain successful plugging in, especially considering we REALLY need to focus on OL.
