Cowher, like his mentor, "Marty Ball" Schottenheimer, play conversative football. They win 10 games a year and never see a Super Bowl. Cowher basically followed that path until last year.
The playoffs are totally different animal - most to all teams in the playoffs can stop the run or at least reduce its impact of being the game difference. So why did Cowher change in 2005 and what makes you think he has learned the lesson for a long time to come. Some say Wisenhunt convinced him, others say it is because he trusted Ben, some say it because we were such underdogs and on the road that he had to mix it up. What do you say? By the way, I looked back at the Cowher postings from December, 2005. It was a mixed bag on Cowher but nothing a Super Bowl didn't fix. Personally, I am not Cowher fan and his brand of "Marty Ball", but if he really has learned the playoff game, though it certainly took a long time... I hope he sticks around.

Like what Arkie said and no matter what your game plan is you'll always need a very capable field general. We finally have ours in Ben. IMO I think Cowher has gotten away from being a micro manager and started trusting and listening to his co-ordinators more. We've got the best in the business with LeBeau and Whisenhunt and the rest of the staff. Year in and year out teams stick to their basic philosophies but through great coaching and experience comes the wisdom to know when to tweak those game plans to adapt to the ever changing game. Cowher has come full circle and will definitely keep tweaking for a few more seasons.

OH YEAH gotta agree. I think we finally got our field general in Ben, that hasent been there, since Bradshaw. PLUS WISE is a hell of a Offensive Play Caller, But of course that comes back to personel. But as Cowher said "We didn't even win our division" I believe thats the first step this year! He wants to Command respect in OUR division and the Team is More Solid this year than last overall. Figure this as well we finally went in as UNDERDOGS and played the games the way we wanted.

Imagine the possibilities of having had Ben during the last 10 seasons instead of the list of already mentioned flunkie QB's??
The only thing that concerns me is that Ben is coming in on the tail end of Cowher's tenure and that now that we have a solid franchise QB can we keep the rest of the pieces in place around him. |

Rooney's trust in Cowher.
Cohwer's trust in Coach Whiz. Whiz's trust in Ben. LeBeau's trust in Polamalu. Porter's trust in LeBeau. That's where it starts. And has anything changed? Yeah. I see improvements across the board. The pundits can dissect the personnel but that's what they are paid to do. But after we trounced the Colts they all went to "THE CORE" of this team for the Steeler's success. THE CORE IS INTACT. |

I think all of the points made here are very valid points as to why The Chin took some risks this season. He has confidence in this team as a whole, not in just a couple of elite players. He also has two excellent coordinators who he trusts implicitly. The Steelers last season oozed confidence not only in themselves but in each other and as Cowher is a master motivator, he built upon those confidences and took some chances that we as fans aren't used to seeing. It was definitely one of the most exciting seasons I have experienced in all of the years I've bled black and gold!
