Hoge came out of nowhere it seems back when he started TV work. I think he is one of the best in the business.

The odds makers aren't even taking bets for winner of the AFC North. That's a trip. If you are betting Ben's physical and - perhaps more importantly - his psychological condition is intact than this is you're last chance the go long on the Steelers with great odds.

For firsts... How does any Steelers fan think that Merril Hoge came out of nowhere to tv? Hoge, unless I am badly mistaken is still the only Steelers RB in their history to rush for 100 yards in back to back play-off games... I am pretty sure that is correct, but if I am wrong and some one has the true stats then you can correct me. I think Merril is a great guy and is very football knowledgeable. He played a few great years in Pittsburgh when we had Tim Worley that was supposed to have been The Man...what a joke... I love Merril and hope that his fight with cancer is over now..

i think merrill is the last white rb to rush for 1000 yds in a season. we may never see that again.

Merrill Hoge never rushed for 1000 yards with the Steelers. As for the last white 1000 yard rusher, my money would be on Craig James. Remember him? He was the other half of the pony express at SMU along with Eric Dickerson. He did it with the Patriots in the late 80's.

Great post. I think after this accident, Ben is going to be more focused all the way around and not take his career (and his life) for granted any longer. When a life threatening experience like this looks you smack dab in the eye, you tend to re-prioritize those things (and people) in life that are most valuable and put those that aren't on the back shelf.

Wasn't referring to him as a player. The transition from the field to the booth when he first did it wasn't like it is now. I was giving him major props for the skill to do it when it was difficult and somewhat still uncharted for the NY executives (lawnbowlers).

Now all you need to do to get TV face time is retire. Sports TV programming (a country club for has-beens) is becoming oversaturated with players and pundits with little insight clogging up what otherwise could be real X's and O's discussion...like Hoge would give.

I'd say to ESPN give him his own damn show. Guarantee I wouldn't hear about freakin T.O. and his birthday party.

Now that I completely forgot about. I loved Dickerson (what were the Rams ever thinking). The days at SMU before the meltdown must have been like a mini-wild west.

your right. it was the last white rb to go for 100 yards in a game i was thinking about. '89 he went for 100 and 120 vs kc, and then denver in the playoffs.
