Default Hampton Having ACL Surgery Tomorrow

Steelers nose tackle Casey Hampton said he will have surgery Friday to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, an injury he sustained in the season-ending playoff loss in Denver.

The Steelers had indicated that Hampton would not need knee surgery, but the five-time Pro Bowl nose tackle told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette today he will have the surgery to repair his ACL

Ed.B. of the P-G walks through the possibilities

It looks as though the Steelers need a nose tackle all of a sudden. I've suggested they could move Ziggy Hood there. They also could draft 6-5, 350-pound Memphis defensive tackle Dontari Poe. One way or another, however, they need a nose tackle. Even if Hampton comes back and is healthy for the 2012 season, they need to groom his successor. Maybe that will be Steve McLendon, maybe it will be Ziggy Hood but a torn ACL for a player of Hampton's years is not the ideal way to go into the season. If he's a quick healer, he'll be ready by the end of July. If not, he might not be ready to open the season in September.

Looks like were taking Poe if he's still there unless Tomlin is 100% certain Hood can do it

More importantly.....a new NT is needed since Hoke retired.

Hood will be his successor. He's capable of doing it and we've been grooming him for years now.

We'll take either MarK Barron, safety, or an offensive lineman in round one.

Even if the coaching staff thinks Hood can move over to NT, they are definitely not confident that McLendon can be a serviceable backup like Hoke was. I think with Hoke and Hampton retiring the 1st pick for us is more obvious than ever. Even if Poe is not there we can still get a really good NT. This NT class this season is absolutely stacked and we can get a very good one or maybe two in the draft. Hayward can also play a little bit of NT at some points as well.

Safety isn't as big a need as ILB, NT, or OG. If Poe is there my bet is we take him. If not then BPA of ILB or OG. IMO Hightower may be our next great LB.
