Three Rivers Stadium to be commemorated

By Tony LaRussa
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Tuesday, July 11, 2006

The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission is planning to commemorate Three Rivers Stadium's place in Pittsburgh sports history with a historical marker.
"We're shooting for a ceremony sometime in September to unveil the marker," said Jane Crawford, commission spokeswoman. "The likely location for the marker will be the large concrete pillar that used to be outside Gate D, which is all that remains of the stadium."

The wording on the marker has not yet been finalized, Crawford said. The nomination for the marker was made by the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania.

Three Rivers opened July 16, 1970, and was imploded Feb. 11, 2001. The stadium was the site of the first World Series night game on Oct. 13, 1971. All-Star Games were played at the stadium in 1974 and '94, as well as two World Series' (1971, '79).

Three Rivers Stadium also was home to the Steelers when they won four of their five Super Bowls.
