Leak a disservice to Ward
February 11th, 2012

I donít know how the Hines Ward saga is going to play out.
I do know that whoever leaked to the NFL Network that the Steelers arenít bringing back Ward owes him an apology. (It may not have been a leak. It could have been speculation by the media. - mesa)

That wasnít a low-class move. It was a no-class move.

The Steelers donít owe Ward another season based on the 14 distinguished ones he has given them.

The NFL is a business and a cut-throat one at that. You win six Super Bowls by making difficult personnel decisions, such as what the Steelers are facing with Ward, above the neck and not below it.

Ward helped the Steelers win two of those Lombardi Trophies, taking home a Super Bowl MVP award as well. He owns just about every Steelers receiving record of note and is second in team history with 86 touchdowns.

He has mentored young players, particularly the three wide receivers that collectively have made Ward expendable. He has also been, for the most part, a good ambassador for the Steelers and the NFL.

If the Steelers decide to go in another direction that is their prerogative. But Ward has earned the right to hear it first from them ó and not get blindsided by a TV report.

The Ward leak may signal a difference of opinion within the organization when it comes to the Steelersí all-time leading receiver. It also makes you wonder if someone is simply trying to push an agenda when it comes to Ward.

This along with the way Tomlin was treated about the Arians firing says volumes about the current Front office of the Steelers. I just hope the Rooney in charge now does not continue to play these type games. Loyal players such as Ward needs to be told face to face of the clubs intentions. FWIW these are still just rumors at this point.

Wait a second......who identified the source of the "leak?"

The team decides to move on from an aging veteran and replace him with someone more athletic, faster, able to play special teams and grow as a WR.

Maybe it was just an obvious "deduction" or a "very educated guess."

Production down, age up, role down.....last time I checked that's the way of the NFL, time to move on and look for a replacement.

No disrespect meant to Hines....one of the all-time great Steelers without a doubt.

I will never forget his contributions, but if it's your time to move on, it's time.

THANKS HINES!!!

sure, its time for him to move on. Problem is we already have a boatload of WRs capable of replacing him, so why couldn't we keep him as a benchwarmer? We released Battle, why couldn't we keep Ward in the 6th spot if he's willing to sit there?

Well the first story cited "sources" close to the Steeler Front office. Sounds like a leak to me. Hey I Love me some Hines but I know he is not the future of the organization, but this is no way for a veteran to hear this type news. Front office should have a face-to-face with him ASAP.

This shouldn't be a secret anyway. We all have been saying it. No disservice, no nohting, its the NFl, and its coming. Ward knows it.

IF he was coming back it would be for vet min. BUT a 4th or 5th WR has to play ST, he can not. therefore someone else would have to step up and do it. You cant redefine positions for 1 player just to carry on.

Even if it wasn't leaked, what did Hines honestly expect? Playing here forever? He should have seen this coming. It happens to all NFL players. I'm very sorry and it's very difficult, but now is not a good time to be playing nice guy just so a diminishing player can hang around.

Hines is not the only guy. There will be more veterans leaving.

Got it, "Lost a Step" however, you just don't do this to your veterans, you don't do this to someone who is willing and will take a paycut for his love of this team and orginization. The Steelers are not that type of orginization, to sell Hines down the road because he "Lost a Step" is ridiculous. Keep this in mind Wallace hasn't signed any deal, Sanders isn't consistent, no guarantees Cotchery returns, so tell me how the WR corps is solidified, especially with a new OC that likes to air the football. Not a smart move, he just may fit into Haley's scheme.

I don't know if he can even play the game anymore. Those passes at the end of the season to him were really bad junk passes to get him his catches. Assuming Todd Haley pushes for a tall receiver in the draft say around the 3rd -4th round and resigning Cotchery that would place Ward at 6th. They may not even keep 6. So there is the chance they would cut him out of training camp.

I think the story was rooted in speculation based on Ward's inability to play special teams, but the man does deserve a face to face.
