Default Re: Guess who took brooks

I think this pick has potential - just like any other draft pick I guess.

There were rumours for a while that the Patriots were taking a look at Brooks to inject some youth at ILB - the fact that the Patriots were even linked with the guy makes me think he isn't a lost cause.

Having said all this, I think the Bengals are setting themselevs up for a lot of heartache with their constant selection of players who have 'questionable character'.

If the Steelers or the Patriots pick up a player who has had a dubious past - im thinking Corey Dillon (although he has nothing on alot of recent Bengals players) - and you place him in an environment where he is surrounded by talented, respected vets you can hope to turn him round.

The problem the Bengals have, is that they have a young team, with no high class vets that are renowned motivators, which means the environment is dominated by underachieving players of questionable character.

To me, Marv Lewis seems like a very decent guy but he seems to be trying to shortcut the Championship winning process, much like Daniel Snyder.

Selling your soul to the Devil always seems like a great idea in the short run, but the Devil always collects in the end.

Well said Living. The thing about character questions are that they're sometimes a double edged sword. You can only really just play the odds for the most part. Like most things it's a matter of prospective. If it barks,...yeah it's usually a dog,.....but the question is,.. did YOU hear it ?, Or were you told it was so by another source. Brooks could turn out to be a talented waste,.... or prove every critic he's ever had to be foolishly uninformed about him as a player and person. And as an organization (Bungles) in an arms race with us,...sometimes you take risks. Remember,...scared money don't make none,.. and fortune,... more often than not ,....Favors the brave.

Some pretty good points...I think many people forget that every draft pick you make is basically a gamble. There are no sure-things in the draft. You're doing good if half of your picks actually turn into solid players.

I don't think you should take players with character questions in every round, but if you have 1st round talent sitting there in the 3rd or 4th round, why not roll the dice? What's the worst that can happen? The player screws up and ends up being cut? It's not like a rookie can come in and single-handedly change the atmosphere of the locker room for the worst...even if they try they'll end up getting the boot.

Mike Brown speaks:
Quote:
Bengals owner defends recent picks -- despite off-field troubles
July 14, 2006
CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

CINCINNATI -- Bengals owner Mike Brown defended the team's decision to take another player with a troubled background in the NFL's supplemental draft, a move that has raised questions about the team's standards.

The Bengals chose linebacker Ahmad Brooks in the supplemental draft Thursday. Brooks played at Virginia for three seasons, but was later kicked off the team. The university didn't give specifics about the decision.

Second-year receiver Chris Henry and 2006 draft picks Frostee Rucker and A.J. Nicholson have been charged with criminal offenses in recent months. When they drafted them, the Bengals were aware that all three got into trouble during their college careers.

In an unusual move, Brown issued a statement Friday reassuring fans that the team has standards for its players.

"We want our fans to know that we share their concerns regarding the recent off-field conduct of several Bengals players," Brown said. "We expect our players to be good citizens, as most are, and we hold them accountable for their conduct under team and league rules."

Brown defended the decision to take Brooks, noting that there are no pending allegations against him.

"The club's judgment is that any past transgressions were insufficient to deny him an opportunity to prove himself as a responsible NFL player," Brown said.

The Bengals drafted Henry in the third round last year despite his history of run-ins with coaches at West Virginia, where he was ejected, benched and suspended. Henry has been arrested four times since joining the Bengals.

Last month, Henry pleaded not guilty to charges that he provided alcohol to three underage females. He also faces a drunken driving charge in suburban Cincinnati, and is scheduled for trial Aug. 21 in Florida on a charge of carrying a concealed weapon.

Nicholson, a fifth-round pick in April, was charged last month with burglarizing the apartment of a former Florida State teammate. He also faces grand theft and vandalism charges in Florida.

Also last month, Rucker was charged with two counts of spousal battery and vandalism in Los Angeles. The third-round pick has denied the allegations.

Coach Marvin Lewis said before the April draft that he would "red flag" any players who had trouble with their coaches or teammates in college. He has defended the team's subsequent draft picks.

the bengals really grasped at straws at this one. reports are al groh gave this kid too many chances as it was and he let him down multiple times. several teams and their coaches have ties with groh and a definite need for a player like brooks. the jets especially, patriots and cowboys coulda used him and developed him for the future. mangini, belichick and parcels all have worked with groh and they communicate. the coach knows the kid aint worth squat. you know he warned the 3 aformentionned coaches of this. he got fat and never studied, worked on his game, etc. he would rather hang out with rickey williams in india rather than running routes in football. kid lacks heart and is just trying to follow in his fathers footsteps for his family, not himself.

congratulations bungles, you screwed up big time once again. 1st round talent (doubtful) + flag football league heart = lawrence philips / maurice clarett

Brooks has shown a bit more maturity since getting the boot from UVA, he worked out with a trainer everyday and usually showed up half an hour early...he got his weight down from 290 to 260 so he's in better shape than he was. He showed some drive in order to be drafted as high as he was, we'll just have to wait and see if he continues that.

Could be...of course people said the same things about taking Chad Johnson in the second round. Every draft pick you make is a gamble, if Brooks doesn't pan out, oh well, neither will more than half of the league's draft picks.

thats just an average. in reality youre looking at an average of 5 out of 7 steelers draftpicks making the team and sticking whereas only 2 out of 7 bengals make the team or dont crap out. thats the difference between a winning franchise and a losing one. what makes the bangals f.o. think theyre so good that they can re-invent the wheel and buck a system and proven method that has worked for years baffles me. pretty soon they will be a turnstyle for players trying to patch holes every year like the redskins.
