Default Ward’s spot in Canton should be a matter of when not if

Posted by Mike Florio on March 20, 2012, 1:21 PM EDT

With receiver Hines Ward retiring after 14 NFL seasons, all with the Steelers, the obvious question becomes whether he has done enough to secure a bronze bust in Canton. Surprisingly, plenty of fans presume he has no shot, given an ever-growing logjam of wideout whose numbers have been pumped up by a proliferation of passing.

But Ward’s credentials include something the Andre Reeds and Cris Carters and Tim Browns and (in time) Terrell Owens and Randy Mosses don’t: a Super Bowl ring. More accurately, two of them. (Having a Super Bowl MVP trophy doesn’t hurt, either.)

The fact that he generated 1,000 receptions (eighth on the all-time list) for 12,083 yards (18th) and 85 touchdowns (13th) despite playing for a team that doesn’t exactly air it out makes his numbers more impressive.

Them there’s the fact that Ward has more career catches that Steelers Hall of Fame wideouts John Stallworth and Lynn Swann, combined.

Throw in a reputation for being a tenacious blocker with an infectious smile and no inclination to act like a diva, and Ward becomes a legitimate candidate for Canton.

In the end, the rings likely will make the difference.

Let's look at stats and impact.

8th all time in catches with 1000. 3/4 of his career was in a running offense. That is amazing.

18th all time in receiving yards with 12,000+. Pretty much averaged 1000 yards for 12 of 14 years. Very consistent.

Greatest blocking receiver of all time. League changed it's rules because of him.

Starter for 3 Super Bowl teams. Starter for 2 Super Bowl winning teams. Super Bowl MVP in SB XL.

4 time pro bowlers and 85 TDs.

One team. Image of that team and all time record holder for his position and one of the ambassadors of the league.

I always was with the belief that if you have to ask if someone is a hall of famer, they arent. But the reality is, good PR helps. Just ask Dick Lebeau.

Besides his clutch catches and that smile, my favorite thing about Ward was that he is the only WR that I can think of that defenders FEARED!

what worries me is that most (almost all) analysts have said that while his numbers were good, he may have a problem getting in, which of course, will transfer right over to the writers and voters. Of course he should get in, but don't be surprised if he's one of those ones that keeps getting passed over.

He was simply a complete player, and you can bet that all those saying he should not be in Canton are the same ones that wished he played for their teams. Gonna miss you Hines for sure.
