Bettis came available in the wrong year. Martin deserved it over him.

Bettis will get in next year.

We need to spread the Steeler inductees out over time. We can take up all the available spaces, lol

Ward is a Hall of Famer but first ballot Hall of Famers are the elite players. As big a fan as I have been of Ward he was never an elite player. Pro Bowler....yes....best blocking WR ever....yes, but not elite.

It may take a few years because he is at a position where others eligible have numbers that dwarf Wards. I would love to be in the room when his name comes up.

"Dwarf" Ward's numbers? No. Better numbers, yes, but the only guy who "dwarfs" him is Jerry Rice, also the only other SB MVP of the bunch.

Torry Holt was a much more explosive, Big Play wide receiver. The offenses were of course different. If you look at some of Holts top years and Wards.

Torry Holt topped 1600 yards twice, Ward never did.
Torry Holt topped 1300 yards 5 times (to include the 2 1600 yard seasons)
...Ward once
Torry Holt has 13300+ yards in 11 season
Ward has just over 12000 yards in 14 seasons

Both Hall of Famers but if one is getting in, its Holt.

Apples and Coconuts. Put Ward in the greatest show on turf and he has the same numbers. Ward had 1000 catches and 12,000 yards in a run-oriented offense for 11 of his 14 years. Other then explosiveness, Ward was the most complete receiver in NFL history. He could catch 100 balls, he could get double digits TD's, he could block anyone on the field, he was a leader, he was clutch, he is a multiple champion, he was a Super Bowl MVP.

I cant figure out why a 5th all time rusher would have such trouble getting the ballot ...

torry holt, iiasac bruce, marvin harrison, reggie wayne (and to some extent, tim brown) are all great wr's who have put up HOF NUMBERS, but they are all pretty much the same guy. they did nothing to really seperate themselves or distinguish themselves from their peers.

one thing ward has done DESPITE having lower numbers is set his play apart from his peers. those others are known as great receivers, whereas hines ward is known as a great FOOTBALL PLAYER league wide.

i think this is the factor that possibly gives him an edge. many esteemed people like bill polian (including voting mediots) feel the same way.

hines blocked, passed, rushed the ball as well as any wr has ever done it. I may be wron on this, but the 1st year the 2 point conversion was brought back, i think he converted 4.

add in his SB MVP and likability factor, and he may have an even better shot than i have credited him for.

as long as he makes it, i'll be happy,

he belongs.

Put it this way, Michael Irvin got in. If Irvin got it, Ward will get it. Cris Carter would have gotten in by now if it wasn't for his mouth and crying about not getting in.

I am not doubting he will get in. no doubt he is a hall of famer. he is NOT a first ballot hall of famer and the fact Torry Holt is also on the ballet that year will also hurt his chances of being a first ballot hall of famer. Holt might not get in either first try.

I also disagree with the one arguement that if Ward was on the Rams he would have the same numbers. I actually think Ward would fail as a WR in that offense. Not fast enough.

Also, dont put much value on a Super Bowl MVP. Some obscure players have gotten it over the years and in Wards case it was more of someone had to get it then he dominated a game. Lynn Swann dominated Super Bowl 10, Rice dominated, heck even Deon Branch dominated.

Its a feather in Wards cap but not anything that makes him a 1st ballot HOFer.

He will get in\ though.
