Default Browns’ coaches “amazed” by Trent Richardson

Browns’ coaches “amazed” by Trent Richardson

Posted by Michael David Smith on May 12, 2012

The Cleveland Browns knew before they drafted running back Trent Richardson that he’s an impressive physical specimen. Richardson showed off a rare burst of speed and power in college, and his exploits in the Alabama weight room were legendary. But the Browns’ coaches were still taken aback when they got an up-close look at him on the practice field when the team’s rookie minicamp this weekend.

“I think everybody is amazed,” Browns running backs coach Gary Brown told Tony Grossi of ESPNCleveland.com.

If anyone on the Cleveland staff knew how powerful Richardson was, it’s Brown — he’s the guy who got knocked on his keester by Richardson at Alabama’s Pro Day.

“He lifted me off my feet. I just knew at that point that kid is a powerful, powerful young man,” Brown said.

Browns head coach Pat Shurmur was also impressed.

“Wow!” Shurmur said when asked about Richardson. “He’s a very powerful man. He’s powerfully built. Don’t let the 5-9 fool you. He’s almost 230 pounds. That’s a lot of muscle packed into that body. I just think he’s got a very powerful build, much like we thought, and it shows up on the field.”

The Browns will be counting on it to show up on the field for about 20 carries a game this season.

Jim Brown criticizes Trent Richardson, Mike Holmgren

Posted by Evan Silva on May 24, 2012

Cleveland Browns Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown wasn’t thrilled with the team’s selection of Trent Richardson in last month’s first round, and he made those feelings clear on the draft’s first day.

Though Brown has upset the fanbase in front of which he once thrived, he’s not backing down from his evaluation of Richardson as an “ordinary” talent.

“I think the kid is a good working back, and if you’ve got everything else around him he can play his role,” Brown told ESPN Cleveland. “But when it comes to outstanding, I don’t see anything outstanding about him. It’s not said in a cruel manner. He’s very efficient, and that’s what you want.”

Pressed further on his evaluations by ESPN Cleveland’s Tony Grossi, Brown even questioned club president Mike Holmgren’s commitment to the team.

“What have I said about the Browns other than the fact that Richardson is an ordinary back?” Brown asked, rhetorically. “There’s so much I could say. So you tell all those people that want to look at me, look at what you’ve got. You’re sitting on a mess. You’ve got a guy that doesn’t give interviews except in other cities. I ask all the people in Cleveland, do you get the impression that Mr. Holmgren wants to be there? If you do, then tell me.”

In the interview with Grossi, Brown went on to say Richardson lacks “special” running back traits while reiterating that Richardson’s “speed and quickness” is “ordinary.”

“He’ll work hard for you, and he’s kind of an all-around back,” Brown said. “But if you look at Cleveland, I would have gotten me a couple of receivers.”

of course the Browns think he's "amazing". They rarely have great talent around aside from Cribbs and have experienced selfish, self-serving, arrogant SOB's such as Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow.

Brown was a great player. Hell those who say he was the best ever at his position have a legit argument but he just comes across as bitter here. Anyhow it sucks tha Browns got Richardson. He seems like a good kid. So good luck to him when he's playing the Bengals and Ravens.

Jim Brown has been nothing but a complete douchebag and bitter prick since he retired from the game. Period.
Can you imagine if someone like Trent Richardson, a rock-solid specimen of a human, would have ran in Jim Brown's days? Richardson would have trampled every tackler into oblivion and ran for 350 yards every game.
