Default Big Ben set to golf in sport's birthplace

Big Ben set to golf in sport's birthplace

Ben Roethlisberger is off to play some of the best courses in Ireland and Scotland.

PITTSBURGH - Ben Roethlisberger's passion for golf will soon take him to places where the sport originated.

In late June, the Steelers' star quarterback will take a golf vacation in Ireland and Scotland.

"It's going to be awesome," Roethlisberger said. "Three days in Ireland and a week in Scotland ... 12 rounds in 10 days. So we have a lot of golf to play at some of the best courses in the world."

Roethlisberger, a 3-handicap, will make the trip with three friends.

After a Steelers' organized team activity workout Thursday, Roethlisberger didn't have a list of every course he'll play. But he said he'll definitely tee it up at Kildare Hotel & Golf Club in Ireland, which is commonly known as the K Club, and the Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland.

St. Andrews is considered by many as the place where golf originated in the early 1400s.

"I've played a lot of great golf courses (in the United States), but I've never played in Ireland or Scotland before," Roethlisberger said. "That's the Mecca of golf. So I'm really looking forward to it."

When Roethlisberger golfs in western Pennsylvania, he usually plays at some of the better courses. He's a member at The Club in Nevillewood, Treesdale Golf & Country Club and New Castle Country Club. He also belongs to a private venue in Lake Oconee, Ga., where he owns a home.

Before heading to Ireland and Scotland, Roethlisberger doesn't expect to get a phone call from Tiger Woods like he did three years ago.

After Roethlisberger was selected to play in an event called the U.S. Open Challenge in 2009, Woods called and told him he couldn't break 100. Roethlisberger would be playing the Bethpage Black course on Long Island, N.Y., the site of that year's U.S. Open.

Playing in a foursome that included former NBA star Michael Jordan and singer/actor Justin Timberlake, Roethlisberger shot an 81.

Roethlisberger won't make any predictions on how he'll play in Ireland and Scotland. But he's excited and ready for the challenge.

"It's going to be pretty hardcore," he said.

Roethlisberger said his golf trip to Ireland will begin with breakfast with Dan Rooney, the Steelers' chairman emeritus who's in his last year as the U.S. Ambassador to Ireland.

"Our first stop is breakfast at Mr. Rooney's house (in Dublin)," Roethlisberger. "Then we're off to play some of the very best courses in Ireland and Scotland. I can't wait to get there."
