Default Steelers 2012 Schedule Preview: at Denver Broncos

Pittsburgh Steelers 2012 Schedule Preview: at Denver Broncos

by Neal Coolong on May 27, 2012

The Pittsburgh Steelers are on the road in Week 1, and will take on the team that ousted them from the playoffs in January, the Denver Broncos.

Taking a look at where the Broncos are in May, it will be a daunting task. But one the Steelers need to get used to. With perhaps the toughest schedule overall they've had since 2008, this isn't the last good team they'll play in 2012.

They're only the first.

Broncos Improvements

Obviously the replacement of QB Tim Tebow with QB Peyton Manning stands out the most. While it's easy to look at the game of football in an absolute zero-sum sense, that isn't quite the way it works. The Broncos offense was geared around the strengths it had last year - running the ball, improvising play from its quarterback and calculated deep passing.

Of that, deep passing is likely to be the only carry-over from last year's playoff run. But that area, along with others on their offense, will be even better.

Manning looked sharp in OTAs to this point, as most would expect from a man as driven as Manning is. WRs Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker give Manning an underrated backbone of receivers and as a unit, its offensive line played well enough to establish a formidable run game. Move the yards from the rushing column in 2011 to passing, add more scoring and you've got the Broncos.

It's an outstanding football team, and Denver isn't an easy place in which opposing teams can pull out a win.

Broncos Losses

The defensive secondary may take something of a hit with the loss of SS Brian Dawkins (retirement). It's generally an underwhelming unit as a whole, particularly with the advancing age of CB Champ Bailey.

Steelers Advantage

The Steelers had an advantage in terms of deep passing in their overtime playoff loss, but a lack of protection up front along with an injured quarterback prevented them from connecting on a few deep throw opportunities they had. Denver will look to protect its secondary with the continued domination of its pass rush. Pittsburgh's newly remodeled offensive line could help prevent that, but assuming Mike Adams and David DeCastro are named the Week 1 starters (not a lock just yet for Adams, nearly a certainty for DeCastro), they'll be making their first NFL starts in a hostile environment.

Steelers Disadvantage

Steelers CB Ike Taylor had possibly the worst game of his career in the playoff loss, and while it seems strange to say this, it seems more likely he'd have a better chance of success against a better and more traditional quarterback like Manning. Taylor was playing for the interception far too aggressively against the weak-armed Tebow, and the Broncos exploited that for several big plays. They also exploited OLB James Harrison's desire to get up the field, and had Tebow simply escape outside Harrison, who abandoned the edge.

These aren't problems the Steelers can't fix rather easily, particularly when you play a quarterback as good as Manning. Discipline is key, and it's something that will be stressed heavily leading up to the game.

LaMarr Woodley: Steelers should have beaten Broncos easily

Posted by Michael David Smith on May 27, 2012

In the opinion of Steelers linebacker LaMarr Woodley, Pittsburgh’s playoff loss in Denver was less a matter of the Broncos playing well than the Steelers playing badly.

Woodley says that even now, five months later, that overtime loss particularly stings — because he believes the Steelers should have won that game, and should have won it handily.

“What gives you motivation is not playing in the Super Bowl, getting eliminated in the first round, losing to a team we had no business losing to,” Woodley told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “It’s a team we should have easily beat. That’s motivation, watching teams play the week after us.”

The Steelers were a better team than the Broncos during the regular season and were heavily favored going into the playoff game, so in that respect Woodley is right: The Steelers should have beaten the Broncos. It’s not surprising that the Steelers view that loss as motivation this offseason, because it’s a loss the Steelers believe never should have happened.

"Losing to a team we had no business losing to."

Sums it up perfectly.

Pittsburgh Steelers Preparing to Avenge Playoff Shocker

Submitted by Syndicated sources on May 28, 2012
Brought to you by: Sports Media 101

With the start of the 2012 NFL season still 104 days away, the Pittsburgh Steelers are hard at work during OTA sessions. The Steelers are still in shock from last year’s early exit from the playoffs are looking to bounce back this season. Ironically, starting things off with a little revenge on the team responsible for their early exit, the Denver Broncos.

Fans still cringe at the thought of that shocking overtime defeat handed to them by Tim Tebow and the Broncos, with the sight of Demetrius Thomas breaking away from cornerback Ike Taylor and safety Ryan Mundy for the 80-yard game winning touchdown etched into their minds. Although Denver has since moved on from the unconventional ways of Tim Tebow, to future Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning, who was released earlier in the year by the Indianapolis Colts. The sting from last year’s overtime defeat still lingers amongst players.

Pittsburgh still holds a certain level of disdain for that loss, many feel that they loss to a mediocre team. Many cite that even though Pittsburgh had the better record they had to play at Denver’s Mile High stadium, something giving the Broncos a clear advantage. Cornerback Ike Taylor “It still burns a little, yeah. But, take away that game and look at my season. I had a great season."

The season wasn’t there best, but it was better than losing to the Broncos in that fashion. Of Course they were without Safety Ryan Clark who cannot play in Denver due to his battle with the disease known as sickle cell, which prevents him from playing due to the high altitudes. “Denver is just Denver. Is what it is!” said Clark when asked how he feels about not being able to help his team and play in Denver. Many would claim that if Ryan Clark could have played the outcome of that overtime play would have been much different.

Pittsburgh has done some house cleaning and remodeling as of late. Key additions would be T Mike Adams and G David DeCastro. They also lost some of their veteran leaders like James Farrior and Hines Ward. "As leaders leave," linebacker LaMarr Woodley said, "other guys around here become leaders.”

Why do we ALWAYS play Denver at Mile High?

Not to make excuses (we lost that game fair and square), but when you have a situation where one team necessarily loses a key player from its secondary, one would think the NFL's fair play and competition committee, or whatever they are called, would look at that and adjust the yearly schedules accordingly.

If there were some medical reason why Tom Brady can't play at Heinz Field, you can bet Das Kommissar would find a way to make sure the Pats don't play us at home every year.

Seriously, when was the last time Denver had to play us at Heinz? 2002?

I believe in 2006. We didn't have a good outing, as was much of the case in that 2006 season.

This won't be an easy game and we could very well lose. They have a solid defense, running game, and now peyton manning. They will be a playoff team, and denver is one of the hardest places to come in and win.

Our team will be stronger than last year's imo though, but it won't be an easy game. I'm predicting a close game decided by less than 7. Peyton manning is a much bigger problem than tebow, so I'm not overly optimistic about a win in week 1.
