Pa. woman drowns after backing ATV into creek
The Associated Press
Updated: 06/07/2012 07:36:03 AM EDT

AIRVILLE, Pa.—Police say a central Pennsylvania woman drowned after accidentally backing an all-terrain vehicle into a creek.

State police say the woman and her husband were celebrating their anniversary Wednesday night when she backed the ATV down a 6-foot embankment and into the 8-foot-deep creek on their Chanceford Township, York County property.

Investigators say the woman's husband performed CPR while waiting for emergency crews to respond. York County 911 says rescuers had to use a logging road to reach the couple.

Police say the woman's name wasn't being released pending notification of her family.

I'm posting this because this happened earlier this week and involved someone I went to school with. Joe Fitzpatrick (husband) is a good friend of my sister and her fiancè and an acquaintance of mine who I have known for a long time. He's a great guy and it is an absolutely terrible thing for this to happen, period, much less while celebrating his anniversary and having 2 small children to take care of.

I didn't really know his wife, but have heard she was an extremely nice and sweet person and couldn't fathom what Joe had to go through. He was unable to lift the 4-wheeler off of her as she was pinned beneath it in a creek underwater. By the time they were able to free her, she had a faint pulse and was rushed to the hospital, but they were unable to save her.

To have my wife die at such a young age and under such horrible circumstances would absolutely break me in two, especially if I had 2 young ones to explain it to. I'm at a loss as to what to do, but I thought maybe I could post the story and obituary and ask for anybody who can possibly contribute to their kids' education fund to do so at the address in red in the previous post. I know he could use all the help he can get right now and I'd greatly appreciate it if anyone could give or send a memory tribute if they are able to. Keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Thank you,

Buddha

Pa. man accused of killing wife, lying about wreck
By MARK SCOLFORO Associated Press
UPDATED: 03/06/2014 03:31:56 PM EST

HARRISBURG, Pa.—A Pennsylvania man strangled and drowned his wife nearly two years ago and lied about an ATV wreck to cover up the crime, police said as he was held without bail Thursday on a homicide charge.
State police said Felton resident Joseph Bernard Fitzpatrick III, 40, stood to collect more than $1.7 million in life insurance proceeds because of the June 2012 death of his wife, Annemarie.

A court affidavit by police said Joe Fitzpatrick searched the Internet for "life insurance review during contestability period" and "polygraph legal in which states" in the days before his wife died.

Fitzpatrick also had been having an extramarital affair at the time and had talked about plans to divorce, police said.

Annemarie Fitzpatrick left a signed note on her daily planner at work that listed the date she died—June 6—and said: "If something happens to me—JOE," police said.

Detectives also found an email she sent to herself the day she died, with the subject line "if something happens to me." It recounted an incident the day before in which a huge log almost fell onto her from a pile where her husband was located.

A call seeking comment from Joe Fitzgerald's lawyer, Christopher Ferro, wasn't immediately returned.

Police said an autopsy found a fractured rib and many other injuries suffered by Annemarie Fitzpatrick, but her husband, who said he was riding on the ATV while she drove, did not have any injury that required treatment.

Although her cause of death was determined to be drowning, the forensic pathologist who performed the autopsy told police she considered the death to be suspicious.

I can't tell you how shocked, saddened, and sickened I am by today's news concerning this story of a "friend" I posted a long while back. I'm just stunned that anyone could be capable of doing something like this, especially someone I knew. He was arrested just this morning and I found out at about 2pm this afternoon. Just mind-numbingly senseless and callous.

Although I was not a close friend of his, I knew him since middle school and he always seemed like such a nice guy. I understand that nothing has been proven in a court of law, but some of the things revealed in this article are surely damning and contemptible.

I'm sorry for having posted this original article asking for any type of well-wishes for him. I'm also sorry if anyone actually donated any type of money to the education fund that I included. I just hope that the money actually went towards what it was intended for as his children are innocent victims in this tragedy and now have no parents in their lives. Truly a sad situation.

If he's found guilty of this crime, I hope he goes to jail for the rest of his life. I know I shouldn't say that before a trial happens, but it's just how I feel. I can't ignore some of what's in that article.

I just wanted to post this in the interest of full disclosure and admit my mistake in rushing for any type of pity for this man. Sorry everyone. It's just completely fucked up.

Sorry to hear that Buddha. I guess it's just hard to really know anybody all that well. And don't worry, just because it turned out this way doesn't mean we hold you in any less esteem, piss monkey.

Thanks, Fer. I just feel like such a stupid asshole for inviting this guy into my home after his wife died. I wanted to reach out to him and let him know that people were there for him. Now I feel like I need a very long, hot shower.

I felt pity for him as I put myself in his shoes. I could never imagine losing my wife in a tragic accident in front of my own eyes and being able to cope with it for the rest of my life. Just too horrible for me to comprehend, but to find out he may have been responsible for it just makes me sick to my stomach and feeling foolish.

I just hope that if he's found guilty of this that he pays for this dearly.

Thanks, HAM. I just didn't feel it was fair to have posted the original article (even though it was nearly 2 years ago) without posting the ugly truth that has now been attached to it.
