NFL Notebook: Jacobs set to sign with Steelers today

The Steelers will make it six draft picks down and three to go two days before they report to training camp when they sign quarterback Omar Jacobs today to a three-year contract.

Yesterday, they signed running back Cedric Humes to a three-year contract that includes a $30,000 signing bonus and annual NFL minimum salaries of $275,000, $360,000 and $445,000.

Humes, drafted in the seventh round, started nine games for Virginia Tech last season. He led the team with 752 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns, capped by 119 yards in the Gator Bowl.

Jacobs, a fifth-round draft pick from Bowling Green, will serve as their No. 3 quarterback behind Ben Roethlisberger and Charlie Batch. The club also is moving closer to signing its top three draft picks -- wide receivers Santonio Holmes and Willie Reid and safety Anthony Smith.

LOL...I love how all the draft picks ALWAYS come down to the final 48-72 hours.....

what's up with the lower round picks anyways....they ALWAYS get around the same bonus...along with league minimum....so...what?....they wait til the last minute for what?....divine intervention?

It would be nice to have this all done before camp opens up.

That would definitely put the ship in the right direction early. Then the veterans can get the rookies in the right mind set!

no. hes too big and slow. more a pocket passer like ben than a scrambling qb. if we wanted a slash type i dont think the steelers woulda missed out on michael robinson.

The main criticism of Omar Jacobs has been his slow release. With that being said, he had a chance to be one of the better quaterbacks in next year's draft had he gone back to Bowling Green for his senior season.

He's probably going to be trade bait in the next few seasons.

They are negotiating incentives and bonuses. Ben was a few days late to camp in 04 over these issues. Lucky for him they stuck to their guns because he got over $1M+ on performance incentives on the 04 season.

Incentives are based on starts, plays played, honors and awards, stats, etc etc. and somecases the Steelers must report such bonuses that are "likely-to-be-paid" as part of the salary cap - so sometimes these minor issues become obstacles against the cap.

If you go to the players association page and look at the CBA and take a look at what it takes to calculate and support "likely-to-be-paid" incentives you will see why the clubs hate them. The problem is that the Agents love them because they "spin" the number to their clients and insiders.

His throw in funky to say the least. But they're (coaches) all saying they won't tweak it into a most desirable delivery like a Carson Palmer. I've never watched him play - just some replay - but those who have say laser-guided accuracy.

As long as the Candle (credit that label to someone else) Batch is backing up Ben expect that Jacobs isn't going anywhere.
