Default Steelers Sign Tackle Max Starks To One Year Deal

Steelers Sign Tackle Max Starks To One Year Deal

Tuesday, July 17th, 2012 by Dave Bryan

He's back! On Tuesday Bob Labriola reported via Twitter that the Pittsburgh Steelers have signed tackle Max Starks to the 90 man roster, a move I have projected to take place for some time now.

Starks said on Twitter just prior to the announcement that he had a good visit with the doctor today and has evidently been cleared to practice after tearing his right ACL in the AFC Wild Card game against the Denver Broncos last January.

The signing of Starks gives the Steelers well needed depth at the tackle position now and Starks very well could be the week 1 starting left tackle depending how rookie second round draft pick Mike Adams performs in training camp. Starks can play both tackle spots, which further improves the Steelers depth as well.

The signing of Starks also makes it even more likely that the Steelers will part ways with Jonathan Scott, who is scheduled to count $2.7 million against the salary cap this season. By releasing Scott, the Steelers will clear an additional $2.2 million in cap space that can be used to sign wide receiver Mike Wallace to a long-term deal.

Ding Dong! The Wicked Scott is gone.
Wake up - sleepy head, rub your eyes, get out of bed.
Wake up, the Wicked Slow Scott is gone. He's gone where the goblins go,
Below - below - below. Yo-ho, let's open up and sing and ring the bells out.
Ding Dong' the merry-oh, sing it high, sing it low.
Let them know
The Wicked Slow Scott is Gone!!!!

Yes, let the joyous news be spread The wicked Slow Jonathan Scott will soon be gone!

Steelers re-sign veteran tackle Max Starks

July 17, 2012
By Ed Bouchette / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Steelers moved to strengthen an offensive line heavy on youth and pedigree by re-signing veteran tackle Max Starks to another one-year contract today.

The signing of their starting left tackle since 2008 gives the Steelers the luxury of keeping second-year pro Marcus Gilbert at right tackle, where he started as a rookie. Starks and rookie Mike Adams, their second-round draft choice, will contend for the starting job at left tackle in training camp.

Before they drafted Adams, the Steelers planned to move Gilbert to left tackle. Gilbert practiced on both sides during the spring.

Starks, an unrestricted free agent this year, underwent ACL surgery in January but proclaimed on Twitter this afternoon that "It's a great day, doc gave me a great report! On my way to being game ready."

Starks' experience with the Steelers since they drafted him on the third round from Florida in 2004 has been a mix of success and oddity. He became their starting right tackle in 2005, when they won a Super Bowl, and stayed there until Willie Colon beat him out in 2007.

Nevertheless, the Steelers made him their transition player in 2008 and paid him a one-year deal of nearly $7 million. He opened that season again as a backup but started 11 games at left tackle for an injured Marvel Smith.

In 2009, the Steelers named him their franchise player and paid him nearly $8.5 million for one season and he started every game at left tackle. Before training camp in 2010, they signed him to a four-year, $26.3 million contract. However, his season ended after seven games because of a neck injury and before the 2011 camp began, they released him for salary cap purposes.

They opened last season with Jonathan Scott as their left tackle but after four games, they signed Starks to a one-year contract and he started the rest of the way at left tackle, injuring his knee in the second quarter of their playoff loss to Denver. He became an unrestricted free agent in March and general manager Kevin Colbert said then that they would wait until the summer to determine whether to re-sign him.

No financial terms of Starks' one-year deal were available.

Good move. He can serve as a mentor to Mike Adams and Gilbert and provide depth if anything.

I hope he doesnt mentor them. I have high hopes that those 2 young guys will realize their potential instead of being mediocre like Starks.

This at least means that Gilbert can start at RT and not have to worry about switching to LT if Adams cant win the starting job. If they free up any cap room and release Jon Scott, then its a win as well.

Excellent! The FO has done EVERYTHING perfectly this off season. As much as I love Starks, I hope he isn't on the field much because that would mean Adams was injured or not working out. Either way, now we have a good LT who can step in and play instead of moving around the whole offensive line if Adams goes down. And that's even a better option compared to putting in Johnathan Scott.

About time! Glad he's healthy enough to get a look - other than health, can't imagine why they would keep Scott over Starks - anyone know his cap number?
