Default Recapping the Giants' 32-31 loss to the Jaguars

Recapping the Giants' 32-31 loss to the Jaguars (Read more)

The New York Giants opened their preseason schedule last night against the Jacksonville Jaguars, falling 32-31 after the Jaguars converted a two point conversion at the 2 minute mark.

With Domenik Hixon sidelined with a minor hamstring strain, it is worth noting that Ramses Barden started alongside Victor Cruz at wide receiver. Starter Hakeem Nicks, of course, remains out and may not play during the preseason. Sean Locklear also started at left tackle with Will Beatty nursing a back injury.

Below are my own initial observations on the game.

The Giants started off with the ball, but had limited success on the ground. Eli Manning made a nice throw to newly acquired tight end Martellus Bennett to convert on a third down, and followed that up with a strike to Barden, but the drive soon stalled as Manning was off target on the next third down opportunity.

The defense also struggled out of the gate, giving up a touchdown on a 13 play opening drive. Blaine Gabbert was 4 for 4 on 3rd down on the drive, twice beating 2nd year corner Prince Amukamara, starting while Terrell Thomas is out. Amukamara was beaten on a short fade in the end zone when he was caught peaking back at the quarterback.

Rookie running back David Wilson helped turn the tide with a 46 yard kick return that showed his quickness to cut down the right sideline, and Manning followed it up with a nice comeback route by Victor Cruz, who proceeded to display his shiftiness with solid yards after the catch. He then let a pass go through his hands, however.

The next play was a screen to running back Ahmad Bradshaw that collected 7, but should have been more with the right side of the line not getting out in space in time. On third down, Manning pinpointed an arcing ball into the endzone that 2nd year receiver Jerrel Jernigan attempted to secure, but it fell harmlessly off of his left hand. His right arm may have been tied up with the defender, but no pass interference was called. Lawrence Tynes was called upon to come away with 3 points in the red zone.

The defense stepped up on the next possession with Amukamara stripping the ball out of the running back’s arms after he was allowed a gain for what would have been a first down; Justin Tuck recovered the ball. Manning was off on the ensuing drive on his two passes, one that could have been intercepted if Jernigan did not defend the pass. After that, running back D.J. Ware was called upon when a personal foul on the Jaguars set up a short field. He carried the ball 3 times within the redzone, spinning off the linemen on the last carry for the touchdown.
