Default I can't believe they did this?!?!?!

I truly cannot believe my home state did this! I am flabbergasted to see them let her off! Actually, I am just plain old pissed off!!! Anything remotely similar to this when concerning a child should automatically come with Capital Punishment upon conviction....that afternoon!

HOUSTON (AP) - Andrea Yates showed little emotion, as a Houston judge told her jurors have found her not guilty by reason of insanity in the drownings of her children.

Yates is expected to be committed to a state mental facility where she'll receive periodic reviews to consider her health and possible release.

The verdict was returned during the jury's third day of deliberations, after Yates' lawyers argued their client was delusional when she drowned her five children in the bathtub.

Prosecutors contended that Yates may have been mentally ill, but she still knew what was wrong -- a defining issue for proving legal insanity in Texas.

In 2002, a jury took just four hours to convict her of murder. That verdict was overturned because of inaccurate testimony. The death penalty remains off the table because no new evidence was presented.

I think offences that are likely to be repeated by other people need to be harshly sentences as a deterrent.

Im not sure how likely it is that someone in their 'right mind' would have drowned her own children - obviously very mentally disturbed.

I also hate to hear about people getting off on loopholes and techicalities - the BS that keeps Lawyers in expensive cars and the best suits.

It doesn't take much when you look at Andrea Yates to see that she is a burger shy of a happy meal, but I can't say I'm happy with the verdict. People who commit such henous and heartless crimes against children (especially their own flesh and blood) should just be put out of their misery - period, imo. Every time I think of those poor little angels' last vision - that of seeing the person they trusted most in this world....their mother....drowning their brothers and sisters, not understanding why (does anyone really understand why?) and the sheer terror they must have felt knowing they were next - it tears me up inside.

Any good parent, insane or not would have put a gun in their mouth and called it a day.

You could not be in your "right mind" but not be legally insane. If I remember correctly, there are two different standards for insanity in most states. Some say a person has to not know that the crome they are committing is wrong. Some say that you can know its wrong, but you are compelled to commit the act by your mental illness. For example, Yates could have known that killing her children was against the law, but her psychotic delusions made her believe that she had to kill them to "save" them.

Most killings require a certain amount of insanity. Would you believe I close my eyes when I swat a fly? Hmmm That sounds kind of insane, too.

I was prepared for either verdict in the Yates case. Both verdicts would be right and wrong. Trithfully, I didn't follow that case b/c I can't stand to hear about children getting murdered.

From the reports I read, she anticipated problems from the older kids so she drowned them first....And she also called 911 right afterwards. To me, that shows pre-meditation and that she knew it was wrong....I'd love to have time alone with her......It would be another Reginald Denny replay. I'd split her skull!!!!!!!!! And the bad part is, I'd really enjoy it.

You know, for herself, she would have been better off with the death sentence. Now they're putting her in a home and all, but if she ever gets cured, she has to live with the fact that she killed her five children. All I know is, if I had to live with that for the rest of my life, i'd just end up killing myself. Who knows? That just might be the way it ends.
