Beachum was a nice pick. Smart kid; can play any position. Kugler requested this pick.

Also, I think they're likely to play more than just what the starters play, as they need the game experience. I'm looking forward to seeing Kelvin Beachum as well. Supposedly he will be getting playing time at both LG and LT.
Considering the Steelers drafted these guys in the first two rounds, I wasn't surprised in the least that they'd be starting on Thursday, and I wouldn't be surprised if they start the next three games as well. Tomlin wants them to get a little play time under their belts, and hopefully the rookies will keep Ben from getting killed.

funny you should mention that-

LATROBE – Marcus Gilbert understands what Mike Adams is going through, and Gilbert thinks the rookie left tackle will come through his first NFL preseason game Thursday night just fine.
“Mike’s been running a lot of reps with the ones and he’s feeling more comfortable each time he comes out to practice,” said Gilbert. “All he has to do is carry it over to the game and he’ll be fine.”

Gilbert, of course, is the Steelers’ starting right tackle. But last preseason he was the left tackle against these very Philadelphia Eagles and pass-rusher Trent Cole.

Gilbert wasn’t scheduled to play with the first team that night, but Jonathan Scott was injured on the first play and Gilbert was thrown into the fire. He helped complete the 14-play touchdown drive, and the confidence he gleaned from the success catapulted him to the team Rookie of the Year Award by the end of the season.

“I just went in there and had to play with high confidence,” Gilbert said. “You have to be aware of your responsibility, which is protecting Ben (Roethlisberger), our leader and a great quarterback. You have to realize you’re going to do any and everything to keep guys off of him.”

Roethlisberger dropped back to pass four times that night and was hit three times with a sack. However, none of those hits came from Cole, the Eagles’ third all-time leading sack specialist, who lined up across from Gilbert.

Gilbert called him “one of the top dudes I faced the whole year,”

We should be very careful with Ben in this first exhibition game. Philly will be playing inspired with the passing of Andy Reid's son.

Give Ben 2 series and get him the heck out of there.

Give Byron and Charlie 1 series and get them the heck out of there

Tony, I admitt that I was skeptical of Gilberts footwork when drafted, but after watching that preseason game against the Eagles and Cole, I was impressed with him.

In that game, Cole beat Gilbert to the edge, but Gilbert used his athleticism and long arms to ride Cole all the way around Ben to keep him clean. Trent Cole beats a lot of guys to the edge, but some arent quick enough to recover. Its why I think Gilbert can play LT well if needed.

Adams should be an even better athlete, but what he flashed in college was times of laziness or lack of focus, where a guy like Cole will set him up with a couple outside rushes, then rip cross-face on a later move when he gets him leaning. Gonna be fun to watch them for the first couple series that the 1's are in.

it seems like adams stupid marijuana issue is a forgotten thing of the far past. but hopefully that scare, haviong to beg his way back in and actually getting drafted by a team he allegedly loves, has given him a new sense of drive and sharpened his focus on what matters most in life and right now, that is protecting big ben. i cant wait to see them in action either.

imagine a young talented OL group across the board... (i think im getting a woody).

It wasnt just the pot. IMO, Adams was inconsistent, got suspended, didnt spent time in the weight room AND was smoking pot before the combine where he would get tested (STUPID).

All of that added up to a lot of red flags that no team in their right mind would give top 15 draft pick $$$ to. If he is scared straight, then we got a winner. If he relapses, we got Robert Gallery.
