Ed Bouchette has stated that, although I honestly think they wouldn't do that to Hood unless Heyward was significantly better and Hood was really struggling. I think Heyward will see A LOT of playing time at both DE spots this year though, possibly playing a third of the game at each end.

Great point: a three-DE rotation.   They split the downs evenly.

First series:  Beard & Hood

Second series:  Heyward & Hood

Third series:  Beard & Heyward

For what it's worth, Bouchette just wrote this:

http://www.post-gazette.com/stories/...-depth-647530/

Quote:
Hood clear-cut starter

An anticipated competition between two first-round draft choices at defensive end has not materialized in the first week of practice in pads in Latrobe.

As it was last season, Ziggy Hood ('09) starts on the left side and Cameron Heyward ('11) backs up Brett Keisel on the right. Hood started 10 games for an injured Aaron Smith in '10 and 14 games for Smith last season. This will be the first season he enters as the starter, provided things stay this way.

"I know what to do, I don't have to worry about learning the plays from somebody else," said Hood, describing what it means to enter this season No. 1 on the left. "I have the plays down."

He also cut some excess, he said, although he still weighs 305.

"I feel physically bigger. I dropped a lot of fat. The scale still reads 305, but I feel physically bigger."

Lets see what happens in some pre-season games....And even if he is struggling, this guy seems to have that will to succeed about him and will work his tail off to get it right

The title of the article says: "Hood clear-cut starter."

But, two paragraphs down, he writes: "This will be the first season he enters as the starter, provided things stay this way."

Hmmm... well... it sounds to me like Hood is currently the "starter", but that it doesn't rule out Heyward getting a large number of plays.  Right?

I knew it, I knew it, I knew it..we should have never drafted him 1st overall...hell, DeBusto would have lasted until the 5 round and we could have gotten him then.

Well, Bouchette sounded more confident a month or two ago than he does now that Heyward would be in a battle with Hood. I don't really know what to think to be honest, although like I said before, Hood will probably have to really struggle to not start.

Alan Robinson‏@arobinson_Trib

Now will be very surprised if David DeCastro doesn't start opener. He's picking up offense quickly, seems to rarely miss an assignment.

Alan Robinson‏@arobinson_Trib

DeCastro also is B-I-G, even by current NFL standards. Now see why Andrew Luck loved the guy. #Steelers

Didn't pay too much attention to him while i was there the last 3 days...but do remember his stare, lol...but he did sign alot of autos at the open practice I was at.
