yesterday someone on this board said that the steelers typically suck on third and long (or something to that effect).

big ben has built a possible hall of fame career on it.

this morning on sirius radio, ross tucker was saying that ben is the best 3rd down qb he has ever witnessed (he played a pretty lengthy career and now has built a decent career in broadcasting, writing, and being an analyst). bob pappa pretty much agreed.

10 YPA is a historical number.

No doubt he's been pretty clutch in 3rd down situations. That final drive against the Jets may have been capped off by a running score, but without Ben they end up having to put the defense back on the field long before that. I think he's being put into some 3rd & long situations a little too often.

Jets lament third down

The Jets had two reasons for their loss. They couldn't get off the field on third down, and they couldn't convert a third down when they needed.

"We couldn't get them off the field and ... we couldn't stay on it," Jets coach Rex Ryan said. "When Ben Roethlisberger extends plays like he does that makes it tough. We couldn't bring him down. Every time you play Ben you appreciate him more and more."

The Steelers converted 8 of 15 third-down plays, and the Jets were just 4 of 12. But it was one particular play in the third quarter that was the backbreaker for the Jets.

With a third and 16 at the Jets 37, Roethlisberger scrambled away from pressure and threw a deep, jump-ball, pass to Wallace, who was closely covered along the right boundary. Wallace jumped, caught the pass in the end zone and just got both feet in bounds for the score.

"That third and 16 killed us," Ryan said. "And Wallace does a great job of getting his feet in bounds on that play."

Safety LaRon Landry, who was flagged for two personal foul penalties in the game, echoed his head coach.
"We just didn't execute on third down," he said. "We have to get off the field."

Good Lord Tomlin was fired up!!! hahaha. Seeing that clip when watching the game, I went crazy. Yeah he may be a players coach, but lets be real for a moment. Despite the win, the O-line still was not spectacular. But when your HEAD coach pumps you up like this, it HAS to give you that extra drive to prove something on the field. As the game went on, that proved to be true.

Ben's historical 3rd and long was not very good.

That is one area that needed to improve, and so far, it seems to be a trend in the right direction.

Lets hope the trend continues.

Too many 3rd downs. We need more yards on 1st down.

Ben's 3rd down numbers have been impressive throughout his career...its just that he does it in such an unconventional manor.

Most QBs that excel on 3rd down do it through reading & recognizing defenses...Ben does it through brute strength and accuracy on the move.

The only time Ben concerns me on 3rd down is when the defense only rushes 3 and drops 8. Ben's gunslinger mentality has gotten him into trouble in these situations, but historically speaking, Ben is a VERY effective 3rd down cube.

Cowher was GREAT at pumping up his players.
