I have a nickname for Charlie I call him "the Candle". It just seems one blow and he is out. But I have ton of respect for the guy. I have read before about his off the field work and I think its great. As for him being the backup. All I can say is at least Tommy is gone. The two games Tommy started last year proved he was done as a NFL QB.

But really with the drafting of Omar Jacobs and if he continues to develop. I only see Charlie being here this year and next year. By 2008 I think Jacobs will be the backup.

I feel very uncomfortable with Batch at the helm. I saw him when he was with the Lions and I realize it is totally different with the supporting cast of the Steelers. But the guy was always "hurt" constabtly horizontal (the Lions had no line for him) When I saw him play with the Steelers and starting in a game I was very impressed, he looked good ...but he hurt his hand and was out.

The guy is too fragile.

Thats why I call Charlie "the Candle".

The issue of being comfortable is somewhat moot since there is nothing that can be done to change it. What the Candle wants (I think) is another Super Bowl ring. And he knows that his best chances for that is with Ben behind center. Batch is not Doug Flutie - thank God. He's a solid teammate and community man.

The only person who can change this is Omar Jacobs. Until then. We just have to pray that if Ben can't go that Batch won't go 'out'. When he can stay in he does well enough

Couldn't we say the same about Ben? In less than 12 months, he's had knee surgery, a broken thumb, and smashed his head into a car's windshield. And what about Duce Staley and his constant barrage of injuries?

Batch = A-okay as our #2 QB in my book!

Charlie Batch is a very good guy. He does a lot for the community of Homestead. I am also confident in him as our #2 guy. I know he can get the job done.

Batch did have a pretty good supporting cast for a year or two with the Lions - Barry Sanders in his backfield for one year and a pretty good duo of receivers in Moore and Morton and down the road a bit, Crowell.

Maddox single-handedly gave away the Jax game but didn't play all that badly in the Baltimore game. He also played against two pretty darned good defenses in those two contests. Those two losses had no effect on the Steelers making the playoffs and getting to the Super Bowl. Batch, on the other hand, played horribly in the Green Bay game (yes - Green Bay) and had it not been for Troy Polamalu's fumble recovery for a TD, I have no doubt that the Pack would have won that game and our playoff hopes would have gone down the drain. I don't want to hear that he was "rusty" - he played in 3/4 of the Steelers pre-season games and Maddox had very little pre-season playing time and hadn't played in a regular season game since mid-2004. Batch played well enough to win in the Cleveland game last season, but looking at his history, I reiterate what I said - I do not feel comfortable with him behind center and pray that Ben is able to stay healthy this season. As I also said in a prior post, I will, however, support him if he is called upon because he wears the black and gold, but I won't be jumping up and down for joy.

I didn't get nervous until the thumb injury where Maddox came in. We remember what happened in the next few weeks. He also had a 30 yard TD pass in a game later in the season against Cleveland.

I will give you that the Cleveland games may not be the best time to gauge a performance (and I really didn't get to see him play for Detroit), but I really wasn't worried when he had to take over for Big Ben. That being said, I hope that Ben has a healthy and successful season and can lead the team like he did last year.
I agree, Chronic. All QBs have some bad games. Just look at Ben in the Super Bowl. It wasn't his best performance last season. The QB is only one wheel in the cog in the grand scheme of things. Success takes teamwork, as well as trust and confidence in each other to get the job done.

It's nice to have a guy like Batch in our back pocket. Love his attitude and he's definitlely a team player.
