Default Re: Pens open against Flyers in Philly?

The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired defenseman Douglas Murray via trade with the San Jose Sharks.

In return, the Sharks get Pittsburgh’s 2013 second-round pick. The Pens are also obliged to send a 2014 second-rounder to San Jose if Murray re-signs with Pittsburgh this summer.

In 29 games this season, the 33-year-old defenseman has three assists and 26 penalty minutes. He is averaging a little over 17 minutes of ice-time per game.

Murray is playing in the final year of a four-year, $10 million contract that carries an annual average value of $2.5 million against the salary cap. He will be an unrestricted free agent at the conclusion of the year.

Cup or bust!

so who sits? - better not be Despres - Letang, Niskanen, Martin, Orpik, Eaton, Engelland and now Murray. That's 7 veteran defensemen.

Gearing up for Boston. I'd say. Tough net clearing guys to protect Fleury is what we're getting.

Pens are already loaded with talent on offense and have tons of D prospects - Despres, Pouliot, Maata, Harrington, Samuelsson, Bortuzzo, Doumouli - - it's all about The Cup now.

They already have the talent....

They are filling up on character guys.....

We didnt need to give up a 2nd round draft for this guy...we're loaded, plus this guy Murray had alot of penalty time.... I dont like the deal

we can always get more draft picks -, the hell with 3-4 years down the road - most hockey picks never make it to a NHL roster level anyway....I'm sick of 1st rd losses in the playoffs, add some grit, do whatever you can Shero

this puts it into better perspective...Hockey is NOT football!

THE VALUE OF A DRAFT PICK?

In the last 10 years there were 2700 players drafted and only 439 of them (16.2%) turned into NHL players.

FIRST ROUND (286 picks)

25 became dominant players. (8.8%)
148 turned into decent players. (51.7%)
113 were short lived or busts (39.5%)

SECOND ROUND (326 picks)

4 became dominant players. (1.2%)
70 turned into decent players. (21.5%)
252 were short lived or busts. (77.3%)

I'm not a fan of this deal either. I like our current set of defensemen. They seem to be playing just fine. Despres will work his way into being a solid player, I can see it.

I'm afraid this Doug Murray will be like an Eric Godard-type player. He's used for enforcer purposes and won't contribute much to scoring and killing penalties. A second-round pick is too steep of a price for a guy like that. Maybe a fourth or fifth rounder, but not a second. SMH.

Morrow and Murray add an element of toughness, coach Dan Bylsma said.

The Penguins have not admitted they lacked that attribute in their last three playoff losses — all to lower-seeded opponents — but Shero and Bylsma have each recently referred to a favorite phrase: “tough to play against.”

Gearing up for a 7 game series with Boston - that's what we're doing.

Thats great an all, but if this guy sits in the box alot during those 7 games with Boston, what good will that be?
