The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed goaltender Eric Hartzell, to a one-year entry-level contract, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.

The deal runs through the 2012-13 season and has an average annual value of $925,000.

Hartzell, 23, led Quinnipiac University to the school’s first-ever Frozen Four appearance this past weekend at CONSOL Energy Center. Hartzell helped the Bobcats reach Saturday night’s championship game.

The 6-foot-4, 187-pound netminder was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award as the NCAA’s top college hockey player this season after posting a 30-7-5 record, 1.57 goals-against average and .933 save percentage in 42 starts

I had to look it up....

Penguins signed Vokoun to a two-year contract worth an average annual value of $2 million. Vokoun's contract begins with the 2012-13 season and runs through the 2013-14 campaign

Thanks for the article on the Pens signing a goalie. Does this say anything about the goalies we have in the minors, particularly Theissen? He did play several games for us last year... I'm just curious if Shero/Lemieux are concerned with the goalies at WBS, that they aren't viable for the NHL as backups.

maybe size matters? from what I gathered this new kid is big and tall with room to grow - while the other guys are kinda small and smurfy

you can't have enough talented goalies, I think that's all that really matters

Yeah the first thing I noticed about this new guy is that he is 6'4". I always think of Flower as a shrimp for some reason, but he is 6'2", so not that much shorter.

I know the Pens just played Saturday, but it seems like forever since the Pens have played ( come on Wednesday ). LOL. Plus it is giving the players some much needed rest.

Lets win the next two games and clinch the number one seed in the east.

4 games in 6 days coming up

Habs got massacreed by the Flyers last night - back to back losses for them, 7 pt lead with a handful left, we're golden

That's just how the scheduling works. The league had the Penguins play a lot of games early in the season. For the last few weeks the team has seen more off days. I would consider that a benefit. The injured players can rest/heal and practice. I'd rather have it where we have more days off now than play more games and become fatigued by the time the playoffs start, because that's when it counts.

Don't look now but Winnipeg is about to take the 8th spot from the Rangers....they just won and the Flyers dumped the Rags - knocked Lundqvist. around pretty good. tied up in pts and have a big ROW advantage in the tie-break.

I think I'd rather play them anyway
