Default Steelers SP Teams Deserves a Thread

I was responding to Steelfury, yes THE Steelfury, the illustrious MOTW, and realised the special teams has been a major issue for the Steelers and deserves serious attention.

I'd love to get back to at least giving our mediocre offense some short fields.

I think Ben could get back to heading towards the top of his game if we can keep our O unit healthy as well - I really loved what I was seeing before Ben went down.
I think your point about field position is an excellent one. I think that falls more on the special teams play than the defense though. The defense does get off the field better than most teams- 5th in 3rd down defense in the league. The special teams have been a disaster under Tomlin. Year after year it is poor coverage on kicks and punts, penalties on returns and a kicker who can't hit a 50 yarder. I think Drew Butler could be a good player and will get better in time but last year he was near the bottom of the league in net yards.

Suisham is very reliable from 45 and in but when 8 games are decided by 3 points or less you want a guy that can kick one from 50+. There were 7 kickers in the NCAA who made a 55 yard field goal or better last season. Maybe the Steelers should draft one in the 7th round or sign one as an UDFA?

Has the special teams been bad since Tomlin or has it been bad since we lost Sean Morey? I agree, the SP are a glaring weakness of this team and has been I say since 06. I think it is as important as righting the running game.

I noticed this several times this season. Games that were coming down to the wire, we would be at the, well lets say 43 yard line, and not attempt a field goal. I don't know what Suishams career long is, I dont know, 52 I think, reed was much better, there are kickers that can knock it in from 60+ yards out.

happy with Suisham, I would like a kicker with a little more leg (maybe Kathy Ireland). I don't think it's realistic to expect a kicker who can hit 60 at Heinz Field though.

when you have cap issues year in and year out its hard to have solid depth. The place its most effected is special teams.

we are the best at holding on punt/kick returns.

I agree, it seems like every time we have a positive play on SP teams it always comes back. That seems to me like a coaching problem and not one due to talent. I still say we should hire Cowher to come and coach our SP teams.

you know . . .you're right - we are probably at least 9-7 with one less special teams gaffe

I'm sure 1 in particular immediately comes to mind

Only 1 way to go - up, Lloyd!

Not sure what the fix is. I think this has been a source of frustration for all involved-- the coaches, the owners and fans.

Our ST has stunk since...can't recall when.

We've gone through like, 4 different ST coordinators in the last 4 seasons. None of them have made a difference. We even fired Everest during this season, but the ST unit went even farther downhill after that (if that is even possible).
