Default Eagles to Release Nnamdi Asomugha This Week

Report: Eagles to cut Asomugha today

Posted by Mike Florio

The Dream Team is dead. Long live the Dream Team.

Less than 20 months after emerging as the unexpected winner of the Nnamdi Asomugha sweepstakes, the Eagles will release the veteran cornerback, according to Howard Eskin of WIP94 in Philly and FOX29.

Asomugha was due to make a base salary of $15 million in 2013. But the Eagles owe him $4 million guaranteed, without offset.

This means that Nnamdi will get $4 million from the Eagles, in addition to anything he earns elsewhere.

At the time Asomugha picked the Eagles, the Jets and Cowboys were chasing him. If the Jets jump back in now, it would be the clearest sign yet that they intend to trade Darrelle Revis.

UPDATE 10:48: And, of course, there are now multiple reports that Asomugha won’t be released today.

-- I can already see the 'should we sign Nnamdi Asomugha?' threads. This could potentially bode well for us in free agency, though, as teams will be aggressively pursuing Asomugha and Lewis might be an afterthought. Or, this could bend us over in free agency as whatever Asomugha gets will be what Lewis will ask for.

Eagles move quickly to shoot down Nnamdi report

Posted by Mike Florio

Not long after we tweeted a link to the story regarding Howard Eskin’s report that the Eagles will be cutting cornerback Nnamdi Asomuga today, Twitter lit up like an old-school switchboard with reports from local and national folks refuting the news.

Eventually, Eskin himself joined the chorus, calling it a “bad tweet.”

Still, Eskin says the Eagles eventually will cut Asomugha. And he’s most likely right.

As we understand it, the decision is coming in a few days.

The fact that the Eagles appear to be poised to wipe Asomugha’s contract off the books before the start of free agency strongly suggests that they already have plans for spending the extra cap money they’ll realize once Asomugha is gone.

-- Florio is speculating that the Eagles were trying to get a return on their investment, but I doubt that happens now. People are going to read that report and think that he's as good as gone. I think that the intention was to try and get a 5th or 6th for him, but Eskin might have just screwed that up. I very much doubt the Eagles find a taker that's willing to cough up any pick for him.

Basically, Asomugha was going to be traded by the Eagles for a pick (allegedly). Then, Eskin released this story saying the Eagles were going to release him today because of his high cap hit and lack of production. The Eagles came out and quickly refuted it, but the damage had already been done. I very much doubt they're going to find a trading partner because his cap hit is way too high and teams think he's going to be released anyway.

What it boils down to is the Eagles are (probably) going to release him at some point this week.

He's actually one of the best man to man CBs in the NFL. The Eagles put him in a system where he was playing zone which didn't at all play to his skillset which was why he struggled during his time there. When he's playing man to man, I can only think of Revis that is a better shutdown CB than him.

In the right system, he's going to thrive.

I was making fun of this forum's constant desire to sign players that are way out of our range
