Default Kellen Davis set to visit Steelers

With the signing of Martellus Bennett to a four year, $20 million deal on Tuesday, the Chicago Bears decided to part ways with tight end Kellen Davis.

Now Davis has his first visit lined up since becoming a free agent.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Davis will visit the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday.

Davis served as the Bears starting tight end for each of the last two seasons but caught just 37 passes for 435 yards and six touchdowns over that span. He has been remarkably healthy as he didn’t miss a game in any of his first five seasons in the league with Chicago.

Davis could be an option to replace backup tight end Leonard Pope who is an unrestricted free agent.

so he's due - we sign him and he breaks both ankles in the shower

He had a LOT of drops in 2012 and only caught 19 passes.

No thanks.

Steelers talking to TE Kellen Davis again

By Neal Coolong on Mar 14 2013

The former Bears tight end was linked with the Steelers last season before re-signing with Chicago. He'll reportedly be in Pittsburgh today to discuss a contract.

NFL.com reporter Ian Rapoport is reporting via Twitter the Steelers are hosting tight end Kellen Davis on a prospective free agent trip to Pittsburgh.

The Steelers are in a tenuous position in regards to the tight end position. Heath Miller tore his ACL in the Steelers' Week 17 win over the Browns, and, barring a miracle recovery, can't be expected to be fully healthy come the start of training camp.

Tight end will have to be a priority this off-season with Heath Miller's knee injury.

A move for a tight end, whether in free agency or the draft, wouldn't be a surprise. Nor is it surprising the Steelers are talking to Davis. He was linked to the Steelers last year before re-signing with the Bears.

The new regime in Chicago found two of their tight ends, Davis and former Steeler Matt Spaeth, looking for work.

Davis played nearly every snap for the Bears in 2012, and had 19 catches, but with a shockingly low percentage of passes caught to his 44 targets. He had two touchdowns as well.

Would rather have Spaeth tbh. Or just draft someone who can eventually take over for Heath when he's done.

this guy is another Spaeth - no thanks

I've been selling Eifert from ND and I'd rather spend a 1st or pref 2nd rounder on him than go after this guy

That said - he is better than bringing back Johnson who has gotta be up there with my least favorite Steelers in recent memory - if we have some creative way to still move the chains and score without the TE position being a huge factor - then great, bring in another blocker - one that won't get the RB blown up on a constant basis and drops passes in the flat more often than anyone in history of the game

I'm feeling very strongly about the TE position this year - this can be a royal eff up if not played carefully
