Default Free Agency Losers - Steelers/Ravens

Free Agency losers

“Winning” and “losing” free agency is a nebulous concept.

Most of the best-run organizations in football are famous for turning off their TVs and heading to the beach once March rolls around. Green Bay, Pittsburgh and Baltimore are more celebrated for the moves they don’t make than any other team is for the moves they do make. (More on Pittsburgh and Baltimore in a minute.)

4. Steelers/Ravens

Ravens’ Notable Additions: DT Chris Canty and DE Marcus Spears.

Ravens’ Notable Subtractions: WR Anquan Boldin, FS Ed Reed, SS Bernard Pollard, LB Paul Kruger, LB Dannell Ellerbe and CB Cary Williams.

Steelers’ Notable Additions: QB Bruce Gradkowski and TE Matt Spaeth.

Steelers’ Notable Subtractions: WR Mike Wallace, LB James Harrison, RB Rashard Mendenhall, CB Keenan Lewis, S Ryan Mundy and OG Willie Colon.

It’s already been mentioned once in this article: These two AFC North blood rivals are more famous for standing pat than standing tall in free agency.

But their sheer loss of talent this offseason is too hard to ignore. The Ravens have lost five defensive starters in 10 days. That’s hard to do, especially when they’re the same five who just won a Super Bowl ring.

Pittsburgh, meanwhile, has lost its top pass rusher and its top playmaker on offense. It’s true that Harrison is aging and Wallace is perhaps not all he’s cracked up to be, but that’s not how you rise up from only your first .500 season since 2006.

Both teams have odious cap situations to blame, and Pittsburgh has only compounded the problem by restructuring even more salary into their future caps. These are two teams who know what they’re doing, but never will their hard-earned reputations be more tested than they will be this offseason.

I'm sorry we lost Lewis, and I think we're going to get through the loss of Harrison and Wallace. But I don't really see this as too big a loss for us down the road.

Honestly what will hurt us more is if Heath is out for an extended period.

The Ravens are the bigger losers in this Free Agency.
The amount of quality players lost for the Ravens, far out weighs the the Steelers' losses this offseason.
Even with the additions of Canty & Spears, the Ravens seem to be the worst off this offseason. They have a lot more holes than the Steelers do this offseason.

The Ravens have some pretty good depth. Our picks mostly get injured or just don't pan out.

For example, even though The Ravens lost LB Paul Kruger, they have LB Courtney Upshaw waiting (pick 35 last draft). They also lost CB Carey Williams, but have CB Jimmy Smith waiting (pick #27 two years ago-one that many here thought we should pick).

Who do we have for Harrison? Worilds? Let's hope that works out. for Wallace? Plaxico?! hmmmmm.

as articles states - this will be the biggest test yet

Worilds, Hood, Heyward, Carter - my guess is only 2 of those names are going to last after the next season or two

Jimmy Smith is a bust.

When Lardarius Webb went down, the Ravens got Graham (who played very well), because Smith simply can't play the position... although, his hold of Michael Crabtree did seal the SuperBowl victory for the Ravens.

But, you're right: the Ravens are very deep.

They have such faith in Upshaw that they were willing to sign James Harrison, a 35 year old OLB. Upshaw didn't do anything in relief of an injured Suggs. Simply saying names because they were drafted high isn't logical. Look at his film and tell me they have faith in him.

Get off the Ravens' nuts. They lost Reed, Kruger, Pollard and Boldin and you're talking about how deep their team is?

End the offseason! For the love of God, some fans want us to be the Ravens.

Damn, Baltimore let the whole team walk. Doesn't make much sense after winning a SB. I understand the thought that the corp group in Baltimore are pretty much finished due to Ray Lewis retiring, but I would disagree with that. They could have kept their team intact and drafted a MLB and made another shot at it IMO. Maybe there's something I don't know, but it seems like a big mistake on their part and the best news I've heard for us in the FA market in a long time.

As for us it's simple, have a great draft AND find a way to sign a few FA's that can make an immediate impact, or have another bad season. When we talk about our roster any more it doesn't sound good, but it's not over yet, we're just a few players away from being contenders again. This season, and the next 2 or 3, rests on the shoulders of the FO RIGHT NOW. If they can get enough players in this year to make progress and win another SB or two with Ben then there will be no more questioning of them, but if they don't then we're probably not likely to see another SB while Ben is here and we'll be looking at a total rebuild. This year is pivotal, but I think they can get it right.

They just upgraded the lost of Kruger who didn't even start bc Upshaw was playing the 1st 2 downs. Jimmy Smith has been hurt his first couple years but he will be an upgrades over Cary Williams if he stays healthy. Ellerbe was a starter due to Mc Clain going down. It's to early to say who has had the better FA. Only big loses are Boldin, Lewis and Reed. Great players but let's be honest all three have been declining over the years. Good look except when you all play the Ravens
