Default Obama - The Golf Address

Pretty good takeoff on the Gettysburg Address and takedown of Obama by Maureen Dowd of the NYT for his clueless return to the links promptly after denouncing the beheading of James Foley - excerpts and link below

The Golf Address

FORE! Score? And seven trillion rounds ago, our forecaddies brought forth on this continent a new playground, conceived by Robert Trent Jones, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal when it comes to spending as much time on the links as possible — even when it seems totally inappropriate, like moments after making a solemn statement condemning the grisly murder of a 40-year-old American journalist beheaded by ISIL....

Now we are engaged in a great civil divide in Ferguson, which does not even have a golf course, and that’s why I had a “logistical” issue with going there. We are testing whether that community, or any community so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure when the nation’s leader wants nothing more than to sink a birdie putt....

It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us of getting rid of our slice on the public’s dime — that from this honored green we take increased devotion to that cause for which Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy gave their last full measure of devotion — and divots.

We here highly resolve that these golfing greats shall not have competed in vain, especially poor Tiger, and that this nation, under par, shall have a new birth of freedom to play the game that I have become unnaturally obsessed with, and that golf of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth.

So help me Golf.

One thing about Obama, he takes the time to think before he acts. And love him or hate him, the majority of the time he accomplishes his goals even with a Congress dead set on being "Gremlin's" against his efforts and against the best interests of America as a whole.

And if I'm not mistaken, he's taken less vacation days than any modern Pres

He was looking for Nicole Simpsons and James Foley's real killer out on the golf course?

The Obama golf meme is so uninformed. You basically have to have a knowledge of Presidential vacation time that begins in 2009. But, it sells so it keeps begin regurgitated everywhere.

It's a cheap shot whether it's from the right or the left.

He has.

He golfs many times less the the Speaker as well.

There is a reason Presidents age so much in office. They know of many more tragic deaths than the few that grab the headlines. They kill or at least cause to have killed and they send men and women to die. They are never off duty. I would think the worse it gets the more some recreation is needed.

It wouldn't have killed him to miss a round after his statement on the Foley beheading

And it sells because it symbolizes a President who appears to be increasingly disengaged and regards dealing with anyone outside of his small circle of cronies as an imposition

Obama Is Seen as Frustrating His Own Party

The meeting in the Oval Office in late June was called to give President Obama and the four top members of Congress a chance to discuss the unraveling situation in Iraq.

But Harry Reid, the Senate majority leader, wanted to press another point.

With Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader, sitting a few feet away, Mr. Reid complained that Senate Republicans were spitefully blocking the confirmation of dozens of Mr. Obama’s nominees to serve as ambassadors. He expected that the president would back him up and urge Mr. McConnell to relent.

Mr. Obama quickly dismissed the matter.

“You and Mitch work it out,” Mr. Obama said coolly, cutting off any discussion

If there was an opportunity amid the Washington paralysis for Mr. Obama to build relationships, it might have been during his frequent golf games. But only twice in more than 180 rounds has the president invited members of Congress to play with him, and only one Democratic official — Senator Mark Udall of Colorado — has joined a presidential foursome.....

To Democrats in Congress who have worked with Mr. Obama, the indifference conveyed to Mr. Reid, one of the president’s most indispensable supporters, was frustratingly familiar. In one sense, Mr. Obama’s response was a reminder of what made him such an appealing figure in the first place: his almost innate aversion to the partisan squabbles that have left Americans so jaded and disgruntled with their political system. But nearly six years into his term, with his popularity at the lowest of his presidency, Mr. Obama appears remarkably distant from his own party on Capitol Hill, with his long neglect of would-be allies catching up to him....

“Maybe if something isn’t working, you’d say, ‘What can I do better?’ ” said Senator Joe Manchin III, Democrat of West Virginia, expressing dismay that the president seemed to have little interest in taking a warmer approach with Democrats. “Maybe we wanted something different. But it kind of is what it is.

Few senators feel a personal connection to the president.

“In order to work with people, you need to establish the relationship first before you ask for something,” said Senator Angus King of Maine, an independent member of the Democratic caucus. “And I think one of the things the White House has not done well and the president has not done well is the simple idea of establishing relationships before there is a crisis.”

Senator Claire McCaskill, the Missouri Democrat who was an early supporter of Mr. Obama’s presidential bid, said that if her fellow Democrats were hoping for Mr. Obama to transform into a Lyndon B. Johnson late in his second term, they should quit waiting.

“For him, eating his spinach is schmoozing with elected officials,” she said. “This is not something that he loves. He wasn’t that kind of senator.”...

If there was an opportunity amid the Washington paralysis for Mr. Obama to build relationships, it might have been during his frequent golf games. But only twice in more than 180 rounds has the president invited members of Congress to play with him, and only one Democratic official — Senator Mark Udall of Colorado — has joined a presidential foursome.

The NYT is not exactly the home office for GOP cheerleading

And I agree Obama is not the first President to look bad by appearing to believe nothing should get in the way of golf

Just because others have done worse does not make him immune from criticism

EVENT, October 10, 1981 — The funeral of assassinated Egyptian President Anwar Sadat.

REAGAN OPTICS, October 10, 1981 — Reagan went horseback riding at Camp David.
reagan_sedat

EVENT, August 29, 1983 — Two Marines were killed and 14 wounded in Beirut.

REAGAN OPTICS, August 29, 1983 — Reagan remained on vacation at Rancho Del Cielo, California.

EVENT, September 1, 1983 — Reagan was still on vacation in California when the Soviets shot down Korean Airlines Flight 007.

REAGAN OPTICS, September 1, 1983 — According to Fox News Channel’s Chris Wallace, as well as contemporaneous accounts, Reagan planned to remain on vacation until he was photographed horseback riding and was convinced to return to the White House.

The Washington Post, 9/4/83 — At this point, [Press Secretary Larry] Speakes was interrupted and asked if Reagan was going back to Washington. He ignored the question and read a statement on the Middle East. Asked again if Reagan was going back to Washington, Speakes answered, “There are no plans for the president to return to Washington earlier than anticipated.”

FOX NEWS CHANNEL’S CHRIS WALLACE: I was covering Ronald Reagan at that time. He was in Santa Barbara at his ranch when that happened, and quite frankly he didn’t want to leave. And his advisers realized how terrible this looked, and eventually persuaded him he had to fly back to Washington and had to give this speech to the nation, but it did take him four days.

EVENT, October 22, 1983 — The administration began planning its military incursion into Grenada.

REAGAN OPTICS, October 22, 1983 — Reagan remained on vacation at the Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia. Repeat: golf resort. Here are three strikingly presidential photos from Augusta — the golf resort! First, Reagan in his jammies being briefed on the Grenada plans, then, later hitting the links. Where were the Republicans of 2014 to scold him?

President Reagan was still on vacation at the GOLF! resort the next day when the Marine barracks in Beirut were bombed, killing 241 Marines.

EVENT, July 18, 1984 — 21 people were killed and 19 wounded when a gunman entered a San Ysidro, California McDonald’s and opened fire.

REAGAN OPTICS, July 21, 1984 — On the day when many of the gun massacre victims were to be buried, Reagan went horseback riding at Camp David.

EVENT, April 2, 1986 — Four Americans were killed in a terrorist attack at a TWA counter at the Athens Airport, Greece.

REAGAN OPTICS, April 4, 1986 — Two days later, here’s Reagan’s uber-presidential optics, while on vacation (!!) at Rancho Del Cielo:

EVENT, September 5, 1986 — The Pakistani military stormed the hijacked Pan Am Flight 73. 22 people were killed, including two Americans, and 150 were injured.

REAGAN OPTICS, September 6, 1986 — Again, while on vacation at his California ranch, Reagan went horseback riding with the First Lady and was photographed with a “Just Say No” sign.

Presidential optics! Any questions?

Obama hasn't been the President the left (like me) wanted. He's not immune from criticism, nor should he be. But it's not helpful when the left joins the right in petty criticism about unimportant, window dressing, type issues.

It is not "helpful"?

Perish the thought that anyone is not "helpful" by giving politicians they favor a pass on conduct they have ripped the other side for in the past (As evidenced by my link to the W video and your photo montage of the Gipper, GOP politicians have been trashed in the past for not spending enough time at the office).

Part of the problem in this country is the walled gardens of media outlets such as Fox and MSNBC where it is only "helpful" to criticize those on the other side of the ideological aisle.

As I posted above with the second article, Obama is catching hell on the golf because it is a symbol of his disengagement from the political process - surprising that an Administration that knew how important symbols were during the 2008 campaign has lost track of that, assuming the reason is not simply that they are worn out and just don't give a damn anymore since there are no more elections of Obama to win.

I voted for him twice but do not see it as not being helpful to point out the guy could do more to avoid losing the Senate if he would appear to care what voters think about his apparent detachment.
