He never expects a rookie to be an impact player because, for the most part, our positions are filled with guys that are already capable. They're going into the season with Jason Worilds penciled in as the starter. Does that mean if Jones comes in and outplays him he's still going to be on the bench? No. Don't be ridiculous.

The overreactions and pure stupidity that this thread is going to bring makes me sad.
What do you expect people to say when Colbert makes these comments? Yeah maybe some of it is over reactions but when he contradicts himself saying " It would be silly to keep the same talent and expect better than 8-8" then saying if the Steelers lined up today they would be contenders. That makes no sense considering how many starters this team has lost.

I hear all the reasoning shouted from each side - and i still don't get it. Rookies go to almost every other NFL team and make instant impacts - yet - for some mysterious reason - they "can't" here.
The team needs to get with the times,....sometimes i feel we're moving backwards towards the dark ages while the rest of the NFL is passing us up. I'm just not sure i like this way of thinking.

You raise some fine points. You can't have it both ways.

Any offensive player in the first 3 rounds will be an impact player whether the Steelers want them to be or not, they will be forced in either by injury or just outplaying weak competition.

That's not necessarily true, non of last years draft was an " impact player " all year. Adams played, Rainey probably did the most.

Sounds like Colbert is going to stick to his proven method...BPA.

Also sounds like he may be inclined to drop back for more picks.

"Quite honestly, I don't envision anybody coming in and being an impact in Year 1," Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert said at Monday's pre-draft news conference. "I never do because I think there is always a growing process that has to occur."
Joining the choir - I really hate this attitude. It's frustrating to look around the league and see all the young guys contributing. I can almost sort of buy into the process on D, since LeBeau's system has shown such strong results over time. But not completely - surely there's a better approach than letting high round draft picks marinate for years. There's no reason that we can't have players step right in and contribute somewhere.

And don't get me started on offense, where the substandard seems to be the standard. We could draft starters right now at RB, TE, WR, LG, and either OT. In fact, it will be disappointing if we don't hit several of these, since there are plenty of quality linemen, receivers will be available easily in round 3, and backs even in round 5-6.

DeCastro really is an exceptional pick. Look past the injury, and you'll see that he is a true impact player. We need more picks like this!

DD and Spence were injured. If not for that, DD would have started, and I think that Spence would have started by game twelve.
