Default Steelers haven't 'closed the door' on Hampton, Starks

Steelers haven't 'closed the door' on Hampton, Starks

By Chris Wesseling

Published: April 22, 2013

Free-agent nose tackle Casey Hampton's Pittsburgh Steelers future appeared to be over when the team signed Steve McLendon to a three-year contract last week.

General manager Kevin Colbert said at Monday's pre-draft press conference, though, that he hasn't "closed the door" on re-signing Hampton or tackle Max Starks.

The Steelers' willingness to bring back the free agents depends on the outcome of their draft. Neither player is viewed as a starter at this stage in their respective careers.

This weekend's draft proceedings will also go a long way toward determining whether the team signs Ahmad Bradshaw to play running back.

Other nuggets from the pre-draft press conference:

Colbert doesn't envision any draft pick coming in and being an impact player in his first season.

"I never do because I think there is always a growing process that has to occur," Colbert explained. The Steelers do believe they can find future starts in the first three rounds of this year's draft.

Colbert believes there are six to eight special players in this year's draft, but he won't move up to grab one of them.

"There will be a good player at No. 17," Colbert said. "There's no question about that."

Coach Mike Tomlin said Mike Adams and Marcus Gilbert are both "left tackle capable," but a decision hasn't been made yet. Adams appears to be the early favorite.

The Steelers may consider extending the contract of wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders after matching his $2.5 million offer sheet from the New England Patriots.

I hope they slam the door closed on any talk of bringing back Casey

No disrespect to all he's done for us, but it's over for him, time to move on to younger players,

Agreed, time to move past Hampton.

As for Starks, I'd feel comfortable having him around since OT is such a high-risk area for us. It would be great if Max would be willing to be a backup and a mentor, and we might need him as a starter if Gilbert continues his free fall.

It's actually ironic. Starks spent his first 7 years out-of-shape, lazy, and underperformng - even though he was gifted with a body from God. Then, when he's almost out of the league, he suddenly got serious, started putting in effort, and he showed us all what he could have been. Very frustrating. And now we might just need him to start over Gilbert, who seems inclined to follow in his footsteps. It's truly ironic.

Quick, close the door. We already left it open too long and Foote, Spaeth, Plaxico and David Johnson got back in.

If you could get Starks at a low rate, I'd take him. He's been our second best lineman for the last several years now, and has earned his spot at LT. If he could come in and still start, that's great. I agree though, that he would be expected to groom our young guys and be a leader on this team. He's been a good player for us, and would love to have him back for depth.

I think Hampton is just too old and one-dimensional. He is a run stopper, and that is all. He has been a great player for us and he will be missed, but I think it's time to move on.

I like Starks.
But, I think that the Steelers are going to & should go with the two youngsters: Gilbert & Adams. If Starks played for a reasonable rate, then Yes, bring him back (another quality back-up). But, he likely wants more than the Steelers can afford.

I do not like The Hutt... and haven't for three seasons.

I'm fine with going forward without Starks as well. Certainly, we gotta go with the two youngsters, and give them their shot. But that means we probably need to draft another OT, because Gilbert is super flakey, and Adams still needs development - and there are always injuries. Beachum might be able to step up, but we're exposed at OT. BigTime exposed.

Casey has been a great Steeler, but in all likelihood his time is up. I could see him being an excellent defensive line coach one day, but it's time to go with a fresher face at nose tackle backing up McClendon.

Max, however, I would strongly consider bringing back on the basis that he is well-versed on playing in Pittsburgh and he is better than most backups at tackle in the likely event that either Adams or Gilbert go down for a game or more. He is also a solid veteran leader who could mentor a very precocious offensive line that we have here.
