They weren't actors (two friends who made a movie for $7000)... which could explain a lot.

Sorry, brother.

I'll make a safer suggestion (but, still a brain-fuck type of movie): Memento.

Primer is not an action or actors movie. It's a 'high concept' film.

If the subject matter doesn't engage you, it's easy to see why you'd bail.

Come to think.of it, for those who enjoyed Primer or Inception and haven't seen Tarkovsky's Solaris (Solyaris) or Stalker, watch those (although I believe the former far exceeds the latter).

They're foreign (subtitled) and looooong, but thought provoking/'mind fucks'.

The interesting thing is: with a bigger budget (better actors), it might not have been as good of a movie. There is NO way that an exec at a big studio let's the director make that movie like he did. (They would have demanded more explosions.)

Now that it's a cult success, I'd love to see a remake starring DI Caprio & Fassbender.

honestly i couldn't figure out what the subject matter was ...
first i think they were trying to invent a way to make ice more efficiently
then they're talking about rapid mold growth ...so i was kinda assuming their invention changed time or some shit..

right now I'm struggling through Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010). Some people are comparing it to the work of Kubrick or Lynch. I'm not to big a fan of either (although I really love some of Kubrick's movies). I don't know if I'll be able to finish it.

Just recently watched two animated movies I'd recommend to anybody: the Adventures of Tintin from 2011 (these are the writers they should have gotten for an Indiana Jones movie), and the Iron Giant from 1999.

Come to think of it, for those looking for indie type 'thinker' (non typical American) films, Cronos might qualify.

It's one of Guillermo Del Toro's first films. Like Aronofsky's Pi or Nolan's Following (either of which I also recommend) you really get a sense of their style and enjoy their craftmanship.

Looks like it could be a winner!
