Back to movies...

I just saw "Let Me In."

SPOILER
It was pretty obvious that the boy was going to be Abby's new guardian (and suffer the same fate as the old man: killing a person per week for her to feed on). This was obvious... and thus, I thought that the final act was going to be him realizing his horrific fate, and breaking free from her.

Alas... it just ended with him doomed: taking the place of the old man.

It was good, but it could have been so much better (if that final conflict had been addressed).

I may be the only person who wasn't 'wowed' by The Incredibles. It was good, but years of watching The Venture Bros. ruined all the G-rated 'comedy' it had.

Apropos of nothing...

Last month I caught a slew of Oscar nominated movies on TCM. The Red Shoes proves to me that anything done well will win over even the biggest doubters.

I don't like dancing, but when I see really good dancing, I do (see also: All that Jazz). The Red Shoes was one of the best movies I've ever seen and it makes me sad that the 60 year old film is head and shoulders better than 90% of movies made today (seriously, Step Up or Stomp the Yard??? Fred Astaire must be having an epileptic seizure in his grave).

In that same vein, I gave Singin' in the Rain a chance. Not only does a lot of the comedy hold up, but the story is pretty great. All these years I thought it was going to be some cheeky/kitschy G-rate romp, but it was actually a pretty great G-rated sharp comedy.

Lastly, it's a hard movie to get a hold of (Netflix just got it back on DVD), but Matewan is pretty terrific. Another John Sayles film that is one of the better movies I've seen is Lonestar.

Sayles is one of those directors who doesn't have the cache of Scorsese, Spielberg, Cameron, etc., but he makes really, really good films. If you missed any of his stuff, and you can find it, spend the time to watch it.

Oh, and more apropos of nothing...

I also (occasionally) enjoy schlock movies.

Reign of Fire is a guilty pleasure of mine. It's one of McConaughey's best performances ever (seriously) and there's tons of dragon CGI action to boot. If you ever want to get drunk and watch a movie, move that to the top of your queue.

Similarly, I caught The Core on AMC (how or why that is considered an 'American Movie Classic' I have no idea!). Have you guys seen this movie? It's complete and total crap. But it's fun complete and total crap.

It's like someone got chocolate wasted and watched Armageddon, then got the brilliant idea to rip it off and startedt writing their screenplay halfway through.

It's two hours of cliché-ridden, melodramatic, stupid action, mockery of science fun.

Again, if you ever find yourself drunk hit play on either of those two.

@NSMaster56 It's been a while since I've seen Reign of Fire, and I've only seen it once, but I agree with everything you say about it!

Two 'recommends' of two vastly different genres:

'Family/all audiences': Fantastic Mr. Fox

Wes Anderson. Claymation/stop-motion. Appears/looks/sounds hipster. Is funny.

For 'scenephiles' only: Hedwig and the Angry Inch

Think 'new age Rocky Horror Picture Show'. Drag Queens. (Rock) Music. Brilliant use of color/camera. Autueristic.
